How it is built

The index tracks how much fresh ground-clearing and earthworks activity is visible this period across a fixed universe of publicly-announced datacenter sites, using Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. For each site we measure the change in exposed bare soil between cloud-free snapshots; a site is counted as showing active earthworks when its bare-soil signal rises beyond a fixed momentum threshold. The headline is the share of assessable sites showing that activity, scaled to 0–100. It is a change-based momentum signal — where the dirt is moving now — not a measure of size, capacity, or completion, and not a forecast.

Each weekly issue is content-addressed and sealed: this hash fixes the exact set of satellite observations behind the figure above, so the number can be verified against the record committed to before any outcome was known.

Want site-level datacenter buildout signals?

US Tech Automations tracks earthworks activity at announced datacenter sites from public satellite imagery, and seals each weekly read so it can be verified after the fact. See the per-site feed and the full methodology.

Derived from Copernicus Sentinel-2 multispectral satellite imagery — public, freely-licensed Earth-observation data — sampled over publicly-announced datacenter site locations. The index measures OBSERVED surface change (bare-soil and vegetation indices: visible clearing, grading, and earthworks activity) at those locations. It is a leading indicator of ground activity, NOT a measure of construction capacity, power, floor area, timelines, completion, or any operator's plans or intent. Site inclusion reflects public announcements and does not confirm that construction is underway. Aggregate figures are provided for informational purposes only — not financial, investment, or professional advice, and no warranty of accuracy or completeness is made. No endorsement, affiliation, or sponsorship of or by any company is implied. No personal data is collected, stored, or displayed.
