An RIA operations lead has to take a fee reversal, a billing correction, or a goodwill credit, attach the invoice evidence, write the memo, get a reviewer, and land the credit in the ledger. Fable 5.1 and Opus 5 are models. Neither is your CRM, your archive, or your general ledger.

Anthropic’s own models overview, counted 2026-09-03, still tells most workloads to start with Claude Opus 5 and to use Claude Fable 5.1 when long-horizon agentic work or a failed Opus eval is the gap. A day in the life of a financial operations closer

The close does not start with a model. It starts with a fee that should not have billed. An operations coordinator at a 12-advisor RIA opens the billing export, finds a household that was charged twice for the same quarter, and starts a thread. Someone forwards the invoice PDF. Someone else pastes a CRM note. The credit memo is drafted in a chat window, copied into email, and parked in a shared drive named “Q3 credits.” The ledger still shows the original invoice. The archive still does not have the packet. The reviewer still has not signed.

That is a packet problem. The model is only useful if it receives the invoice, the household ID, the reason code, and a place to put a draft that a named principal can reject. A chat transcript is not a books-and-records file. A spreadsheet tab named “credits” is not a posting.

What it costs to keep doing it manually

Manual credit memos look cheap because nobody invoices the coordinator’s afternoon. The cost is restatement, a household that sees the wrong fee, and a file the CCO cannot produce.
