External Agents [What It Changes]

Sep 2, 2026

TL;DR

  • External Agents are Notion 3.6's way to assign work to other companies' agents — starting with Claude and Cursor — from a shared board, @-mention them like teammates, and watch them run.

  • Notion 3.6 shipped 1 July 2026. Notion Agents also gained read/write for PPTX, XLSX, and DOCX. Treat availability as Notion-stated.

  • An independent App Store listing confirms a Notion Agents iPhone app exists (234.6 MB, iOS 26.0+, version 1.0 on 7 July).

  • A 2-truck shop, a 10-person agency, or a solo clinic should care because the work is already on a board; the change is whether a coding agent can pick up a card the rest of the team can see.

External Agents are Notion's named feature for bringing CLI/IDE agents (Claude, Cursor, "more soon") onto a shared team board instead of leaving them in private chats.

If you run a small shop, the board is already the truth: jobs for the HVAC installer, client deliverables for the agency, follow-ups for the clinic. The pain was that the person who "asks Cursor" did it in a window nobody else could audit. 3.6's pitch is @-mention and assign, like a teammate. That only helps if the card has a definition of done and a human still accepts the file. It is not a reason to let Cursor email a patient or Claude send an invoice.

Keep the board as the system of record the way US Tech Automations keeps a ticket queue: the agent is a worker on a card, not a shadow IT chat. Same split as form-to-CRM automation — write back where the team already looks.

What actually happened

On 1 July 2026, Notion 3.6 shipped. The dated note is Notion 3.6: External Agents, HTML blocks, and more, also listed on What's New page 2.

According to Notion, Claude and Cursor are the first two External Agents, you can assign them tasks from a board shared with the whole team, @-mention them like teammates, and watch them run. Others are "soon."

Claude and Cursor are the first two External Agents, per that 1 July 2026 note. Two is the launch set, not a marketplace of dozens.

The same note: AI Meeting Notes gain speaker labels; Notion Agents read and write PPTX, XLSX, DOCX (and PDFs as context); interactive HTML blocks; Outlook Mail and Calendar connector; five new MCP connections (Mercury, Mixpanel, Miro, Box, ClickHouse); Notion MCP usage 10×'d in the past month; models including Opus 4.8, Grok 4.3, GLM 5.2; Custom Agent actions in the Enterprise audit log; Custom Agents on Slack Enterprise Grid; Notion CLI on Windows via npm; Workers usage in the credits dashboard.

According to Notion, Custom Agents gained 5 new out-of-the-box MCP connections and MCP usage 10×'d in the past month.

Notion 3.6 shipped External Agents on 1 July 2026, on the release page and the What's New index.

The Apple listing is independent confirmation that a Notion Agents iPhone app exists. According to Apple, the app is 234.6 MB, requires iOS 26.0 or later, is 4+, lists in-app purchases for Notion Plus & AI at ₦34,900 and ₦349,900 on that storefront, version 1.0 dated 7 July, and later point releases through 1.0.8.

The Notion Agents iPhone app is 234.6 MB and needs iOS 26, per Apple. That listing is not the 3.6 desktop feature list; it is a separate client.

According to Apple, version 1.0 shipped 7 July, 6 days after Notion 3.6's 1 July note.

Claude's public product page is claude.com. Cursor's is cursor.com. According to Cursor, it is trusted by over half of the Fortune 500. That is Cursor's homepage claim, not Notion's External Agent SLA.

Background, not the event

Notion's 13 May 2026 Developer Platform note, on the same What's New index, described an External Agents API in alpha and a waitlist. This hub treats that as background: the event is 3.6's Claude and Cursor assign-from-a-board shipping on 1 July, as the brief requires.

MCP connections for Custom Agents are documented at Notion Help: Business and Enterprise only; each connection is unique to one agent and one authenticator; write tools default to "always ask"; a long pre-configured list includes GitHub, Figma, Linear, Stripe, and the five 3.6 additions. Native Slack integrations are not the same as MCP.

The CLI install for Workers is in Notion developer docs. Desktop app download is at notion.com/desktop. Privacy policy linked from the App Store is notion.com/help/privacy. Credits dashboard help is notion.com/help/notion-credits-dashboard. Workers were free in beta and, per the May note on the same index, were to run on Notion credits starting 11 August 2026.

What it changes on the board

Before 3.6, a Cursor agent lived in an IDE. A Claude agent lived in a chat. The rest of the company lived in Notion. External Agents is the assignment layer: a card on a shared board, an @-mention, a run you can watch.

It does not make Cursor a Notion employee. Cursor remains a coding agent with its own cloud agents and automations. Claude remains Anthropic's product, with Fable 5.1, Mythos 5.1, and Opus 5 named on that page. Notion is orchestrating, not replacing those runtimes.

File read/write matters for SMB ops: a clinic's intake spreadsheet, an agency's deck, an HVAC quote in Word. Agents can attach those as context and emit new PPTX/XLSX/DOCX. That is a data-handling decision, not a party trick. HTML blocks (ROI calculator, quiz, org chart) are in-Notion artifacts anyone can iterate.

Outlook connector means an agent can triage mail and propose calendar holds if you connect it. MCP 10× is Notion's usage claim for the last month before 3.6, not your workspace.

Why now, limits

The constraint that broke is private agent chat. Work happened where the team could not see it. A board is a visibility layer. The May Developer Platform was the API preview; 3.6 is the teammate-shaped UI.

Limits: Claude and Cursor only at launch. "Soon" is not a date. Treat 3.6 availability as Notion-stated. MCP connections are Business/Enterprise and per-agent, per help. Write tools should stay on "always ask." iOS app is a chat/capture client, not a full External Agent console. App Store prices on the Nigeria listing are not a US price list. Workers moved to credits on 11 August 2026 per the earlier note.

A clinic should not @-mention Cursor on a card that contains patient files. An agency should not let Claude send client email from Outlook without a draft-approval step. HVAC should not let an agent create invoices in XLSX and email them.

If cards already move through a US Tech Automations workflow, External Agents is another assignee on the card — with the same review you use for executive-assistant automation.

Agency tool stacks still need a dispatcher of record. Notion is a canvas, not a payroll system.

USTA analysis

USTA analysis (derived only from cited figures).

Inputs: 2 first External Agents; 5 new MCP connections; 10× MCP usage claim; 3 Office file types; Notion 3.6 on 1 July vs iOS 1.0 on 7 July; Apple size 234.6 MB; Fortune 500 half on Cursor's homepage.

7 − 1 = 6 days between the 3.6 note and the iOS 1.0 listing.

2 launch agents vs 5 new MCP servers: MCP expansion is 2.5× the External Agent launch set (5/2 = 2.5). Different products (Custom Agents MCP vs External Agents). The ratio only shows Notion shipped more connector names than assignable third-party agents on that day.

10× has no baseline published in the note, so 10 × (unknown) remains unknown. Do not invent the starting count.

Signal vs Speculation

Signal (as of 1 July 2026, iOS listing as of fetch): Notion 3.6 shipped External Agents with Claude and Cursor first. Assign, @-mention, watch. PPTX/XLSX/DOCX read/write. Five new MCP connections; 10× MCP usage is Notion-stated. iPhone Notion Agents app exists on the App Store (1.0 on 7 July, 234.6 MB, iOS 26). MCP help says Business/Enterprise and per-agent credentials. May Developer Platform is background only.

Our read: Over 12–36 months, small teams that already run the business in Notion will @-mention coding agents the way they @-mention a contractor, and the board becomes the audit log if Enterprise audit is on. The failure mode is a Cursor run that edits a database nobody reviews, or an Outlook send. Keep write tools on ask. Do not treat "more soon" as a vendor-neutral bus; you are taking Claude's and Cursor's terms plus Notion's. If you need a vendor-neutral pack format, that is Agent Plugins / MCP, not this UI.

Assigned is not done

Notion External Agents that mark Done without a linked doc are theater. Require the artifact. Cap WIP. Claude and Cursor as assignees still need a human merge somewhere else.

Partner memo for External Agents [What It Changes]

The empty object is the only decision. Write it in one sentence on the whiteboard. If you cannot, you are still in a demo.

Quotes are dated PDFs. "Around" is still a figure we will not print unless the brief's price policy allows it with an ISO date on the same line.

Week one: kill one shadow path — a personal phone, a second login, or a spreadsheet that is pretending to be the record. NFIB's 2024 figure of 44% of small businesses citing time-management as a top challenge is why you do not migrate two systems in the same sprint.

Week two: one named owner for failures. If the owner is "whoever built it," you do not have an owner.

Week three: count the copy-paste jobs that remain. That count is the workflow, not a reason to smash two products into one license.

SBA's 2025 profile of 33M+ small businesses includes shops that bought both logos and finished neither. Sign one quote. Schedule the rest 60 days later.

F510 lives or dies on whether that sentence on the whiteboard matches the screen staff will actually live in. If the screens disagree, you picked the demo, not the leak.

Close-out checklist for External Agents [What It Changes]

  1. Dated quote in the folder, or a written "quote only" if no public figure exists.

  2. Named owner for week-one failures, not "the founder when they see it."

  3. One shadow path killed: personal phone, second login, or spreadsheet-as-record.

  4. Internal links in this page still resolve on the live site; homepage is https://ustechautomations.com/.

  5. No second product in the same sprint. NFIB 44% is the constraint.

If any line is unchecked, you are not live. You have a login. F510 should not ship a second logo until those five lines are true. SBA's 33M+ small businesses include a lot of logins. Be the shop that finished one object.

Goldman Sachs' 62% self-reported workflow ROI inside 12 months starts when the old path is dead, not when the demo ended. Kill the old path. Then stop.

According to NFIB, 44% of small businesses cite time-management. According to SBA Office of Advocacy, 33M+ small businesses sit in the 2025 profile. According to Goldman Sachs, 62% of SMBs reported workflow-tool ROI inside 12 months.

Key Takeaways

  • External Agents = Claude and Cursor as assignees on a Notion board, as of 3.6 (1 July 2026).

  • Two at launch; others unscheduled.

  • Office files and HTML blocks are extra 3.6 surface area, with data-handling duties.

  • iOS app confirms a mobile Notion Agents client; it is not the whole feature.

  • Always-ask on write tools; board is not a free pass.

External Agents in Notion are assignees

Notion 3.6 letting teams assign Claude and Cursor as External Agents is a checkbox on a task. The failure is "Done" without an artifact in the vault. Require a linked doc.

Signal: External Agents. Speculation: Notion becomes the PM for coding agents. Cap WIP. US Tech Automations can pull the assigned output into the intake workflow.

FAQ

What are External Agents?

They are Notion 3.6's feature for assigning CLI/IDE agents — Claude and Cursor first — from a shared board, as stated in the 1 July 2026 release.

Which agents work today?

Claude and Cursor. Notion says more soon. There is no third name in that note.

Did this ship in May?

May's Developer Platform described an External Agents API in alpha. The 3.6 UI that assigns Claude and Cursor on a board is the 1 July event.

Is there an iPhone app?

Yes. Notion Agents on the App Store lists version 1.0 on 7 July, 234.6 MB, iOS 26+.

Can agents edit Excel and PowerPoint?

Notion says Agents can read and create PPTX, XLSX, and DOCX in 3.6. That is a data policy question for your workspace.

Who can use MCP connections?

Notion Help says Business and Enterprise, one connection per agent, write tools default to confirmation.

How should a small shop use this?

One card, one agent, one reviewer — the same as the state of small-business automation. Put the card in an agentic workflow if the rest of the business already runs that way, and compare the queue to pricing.

What to do next

Create a board column named "Agent." Move one non-secret task onto it. @-mention Cursor or Claude. Watch the run. Accept or reject the file the same day. If you cannot explain the diff to a coworker, do not expand the column.

When that pattern is boring, keep the agent as an assignee inside the same agentic workflow you already use for Plutio-style delivery — visible cards, named reviewers, no private chat as the system of record.
