GPT-6 Astra vs Claude Fable 5.1: RIA Memos (2026)
A knowledge memo in an RIA is the packet a household should be able to reread six months later: what changed, what the IPS still allows, what the reviewer signed, and which account numbers the narrative actually used. GPT-6 Astra and Claude Fable 5.1 both write that packet. Neither one is the CRM, the archiver, or the CCO.
The 3 September 2026 buying job is not “which lab sounds smarter.” It is which model you will call for long, file-heavy professional writing, how you will price the tokens, and where a human still has to hold the send. Independent GDPval-style work still favors Claude Fable 5.1. Token-task cost on the same Artificial Analysis Intelligence run still favors GPT-6 Astra. ChatGPT Plus does not generally include Astra on launch day.
TL;DR
Pick Claude Fable 5.1 when the memo is the product: IPS restatements, quarterly review letters, and multi-file research where independent knowledge-work Elo still leads.
Pick GPT-6 Astra when the same desk also has to move files across apps and you will actually get Trusted Access or an admin-enabled Enterprise seat; list price ties at $10 / $50 per 1M tokens, and the Intelligence cost-per-task column is $1.67 versus $3.69.
Do not treat OpenAI’s provider table as the independent rank. Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v4.1.1 (max) is 66 for Fable 5.1 and 61 for Astra. Fable’s AA run routed about 4% of output tokens to Opus through Anthropic’s default safety fallback.
Leave a second orchestration layer out when the CRM already files the note and a person already pastes one PDF into one chat window. Add a hold when the draft must wait on a unique household id, a reviewer, and an archive write.
How we evaluated
We scored the pair for an RIA operations lead who already has a household CRM, a custodian portal, and a written supervision policy. Weights assume the memo is client-facing after a human hold, not a trader blotter and not a marketing newsletter. METR 50%/80% time-horizon numbers are unpublished for both models as of 3 September 2026, so we did not invent hours.
| Evaluation criterion | Weight | Proof test | Disqualifier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Independent knowledge-work rank (AA Intelligence + GDPval-AA) | 30% | 1 dated leaderboard pull | Using only the lab’s own table |
| Token economics (list, cache, AA cost/task) | 25% | 12-memo sample | Calling Fable “cheaper” on the AA task column |
| Access on 3 Sep 2026 | 20% | Admin screenshot | Assuming Astra is on every ChatGPT seat today |
| Supervision hold (reviewer, archive, no silent send) | 15% | 8 packets | Auto-emailing households from chat |
| Context and output ceilings | 10% | 2 long packets | Prompt over 272K tokens with no long-context line |
Fable 5.1 AA Intelligence: 66 according to Artificial Analysis (1 September 2026), 66 on Intelligence Index v4.1.1 at max with the fallback note. Astra AA Intelligence: 61 according to Artificial Analysis (3 September 2026), 61 on the same index. Those two figures are the independent rank this page uses; OpenAI’s own table prints 65.7 versus 61.2 and is a provider-run sheet, not a second lab.
A day in the life of a financial advisor operator
The book is not a blank page. Average advisor AUM sits near $98 million per book according to Cerulli (2024 US RIA Marketplace), $98M as an RIA-channel book-size figure, not a model score. That is why a missed quarterly letter is a supervision problem, not a typing inconvenience.
A typical Tuesday in a 12-advisor shop looks like this. The paraplanner exports a household’s positions from the custodian, pulls last quarter’s IPS PDF, and copies the CRM activity list into a working folder. The lead advisor wants a four-page knowledge memo: market context the household already heard, three holdings that drifted outside the IPS band, a proposed rebalance in plain language, and a one-page appendix of numbers. Compliance wants the same packet stored next to the household, with the reviewer’s name, not in a personal ChatGPT history.
Someone pastes 40 pages into a chat window. The model writes a fluent letter that cites an account the household closed in March. Nobody notices until the CCO samples the file on Friday. The advisor then rewrites the letter at $99,580 median wage according to BLS (May 2023 Occupational Outlook Handbook), $99,580, which is the cost of the human who should have been in review, not in copy-paste.
That is the job GPT-6 Astra and Claude Fable 5.1 are being asked to do. GDPval-style evals try to measure whether the writing looks like professional knowledge work. They do not measure whether your CRM still holds the signed copy. Adjacent operating work — household CRM choice, review reminders, onboarding packets — still lives in tools such as financial advisor CRM workflow, quarterly portfolio review reminders, and client onboarding automation. The model is the writer. The record is still the CRM.
The workflow, mapped
The worked path is review-to-signed-memo, not “open a chat.” Inputs: household id, IPS PDF, last review note, and a position file that still matches the custodian. Outputs: a draft memo, a reviewer task, and an archive object. No household email leaves without the hold.
A 12-advisor RIA running 90 quarterly reviews can call GPT-6 Astra on the Responses API with reasoning.effort set to high, keep the 1,050,000-token context window in view, and cap output at the documented 128,000-token ceiling, then write Salesforce Task.Status to Completed only after the CCO checks the packet. OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra model page lists reasoning.effort values low, medium, high, xhigh, and max, and it does not offer a none reasoning setting. Salesforce documents Task.Status on the Task object. The 90, 1,050,000, and 128,000 figures are the sample size and the two published ceilings, not a promised conversion rate.
Claude Fable 5.1 follows the same packet shape with a different call. The API id is claude-fable-5-1. Thinking is adaptive and always on. Default effort is high. Forced tool_choice of type any or tool returns HTTP 400, so the memo workflow should keep tool_choice on auto and put the JSON schema in structured outputs if the CRM write must be valid. Cache reads list at $0.25 per 1M tokens, which is the line that changes agent-loop math even though list input and output still match Astra at $10 / $50.
US Tech Automations belongs after the draft exists: the configurable step is “do not mark the review complete until the household id, the reviewer id, and the archive path are all present.” That is a hold, not a claim that the model already filed the note.
Astra tool calling needs the Responses API. Prompts over 272K input tokens double Astra input and cache rates and apply 1.5× output for the full request, except Codex, which skips that long-context multiplier and does not bill cache writes. Fast mode is 2× Standard on API docs and 2.5× Standard on the Help Center Work/Codex rate card; name the surface on the quote. Fable 5.1 is live on paid Claude, API, and major clouds on 1 September 2026. Astra on 3 September 2026 is limited orgs, Trusted Access, and Foundry Limited Access, with Plus/Pro/Business/Enterprise and API described as coming days, and Enterprise off until an admin enables it.
What it costs to keep doing it manually
Manual cost is advisor time, not token list price. Use the BLS wage as a loaded-hour floor, not as a software ROI promise. A 90-review quarter at 2.5 hours of assemble-and-rewrite per memo is 225 hours. At $99,580 / 2,080 hours the wage floor is about $48 per hour, or about $10,800 of advisor time per quarter before benefits.
| Manual step | Hours / memo | Hours / 90 memos | Wage floor @ $48/hr | Failure if skipped |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Export IPS + positions | 0.4 | 36 | $1,728 | Stale account in the letter |
| Paste into chat and prompt | 0.3 | 27 | $1,296 | Prompt lives in a personal seat |
| Rewrite after first errors | 0.8 | 72 | $3,456 | Household sees the error |
| CCO sample and archive | 0.6 | 54 | $2,592 | No signed copy in the CRM |
| Re-send / version chase | 0.4 | 36 | $1,728 | Two PDFs in two drives |
| Total | 2.5 | 225 | $10,800 | — |
Those hours are the reason a $10 / $50 token sticker is not the whole bill. They are also the reason a cheaper chat seat that never files the memo is not cheaper.
SEC-registered IAs: 15,000+ according to SEC (recent Information About Registered Investment Advisers materials), 15,000-plus advisers in the supervised population. This page does not use that census as a reason to buy either model. It uses it as a reminder that client-facing knowledge memos are supervised communications.
The tool comparison
Both products share a $10 input / $50 output list price per 1M tokens. The split is independent knowledge-work rank, cache, access, and how the desk will supervise the send. Do not read the table as “Astra is worse at writing.” Read it as “Fable still leads the independent composite; Astra is cheaper on that composite’s cost-per-task column and is not generally sitting in ChatGPT today.”
| Capability (checked 2026-09-03) | GPT-6 Astra | Claude Fable 5.1 |
|---|---|---|
| AA Intelligence Index v4.1.1 max | 61 | 66 (fallback on) |
| AA Intelligence cost / task | $1.67 | $3.69 |
| GDPval-AA v2 Elo (AA) | about −80 vs prior OpenAI flagship | 1,853 |
| AA-Briefcase Elo (AA) | about +80 vs prior flagship | 1,694 |
| List $ / 1M in / out | $10 / $50 | $10 / $50 |
| Cache read $ / 1M | $1.00 | $0.25 |
| Context / max out | 1,050,000 / 128,000 | 1,000,000 / 128,000 |
| Public ChatGPT / Claude on 3 Sep 2026 | No (limited / admin-off) | Yes on paid Claude |
| Knowledge cutoff | 30 Apr 2026 | Jun 2026 |
| Forced tool_choice any/tool | Tools on Responses API | HTTP 400 |
OpenAI’s launch table still matters for ops-shaped work: AutomationBench is 41.4% for Astra versus 31.4% for Fable 5.1 on that provider-run sheet. That is the opposite lead from GDPval. A desk that only writes memos should not buy on AutomationBench. A desk that also has to click through four apps after the memo is signed should not ignore it. This page is the memo page, so GDPval and AA Intelligence carry the weight.
List price ties according to OpenAI (3 September 2026), $10.00 input and $50.00 output per 1M tokens for gpt-6-astra at short context, with cached input at $1.00. Anthropic’s public Fable 5.1 card matches the $10 / $50 list and cuts cache reads to $0.25. Anthropic estimates typical token bills about 25% lower than Fable 5, up to about 45% on agent loops, because of that cache cut, not because list output got cheaper.
Payback math
Payback is hours pulled out of assemble-and-rewrite, not “AI will raise AUM.” Token cost on 90 memos is small next to $10,800 of advisor time. The constraint is access and review, not the sticker.
| Line | GPT-6 Astra | Claude Fable 5.1 | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| List in / out $ per 1M | 10 / 50 | 10 / 50 | Tie |
| Cache read $ per 1M | 1.00 | 0.25 | Fable wins loops |
| AA cost / task $ | 1.67 | 3.69 | Astra wins this column |
| Illustrative 90-memo token bill (0.2M in + 0.04M out, no cache) | $180 + $180 = $360 | $360 | Same list math |
| Illustrative 90-memo with 50% cache hit | ~$270 | ~$225 | Cache shows up |
| Advisor hours still in review (0.6 × 90) | 54 | 54 | Do not delete the CCO |
| Hours avoided vs 2.5-hour manual path | ~171 | ~171 | Only if the packet is reused |
If the practice will not staff the 54 review hours, neither model is a bargain. If the practice already reviews every letter, the model is a draft engine and the cache line is the only token fight that matters at this volume.
Do not tell a cost owner that Fable is cheaper than Astra on the AA Intelligence cost-per-task column. It is not. Tell them Fable is more expensive on that column and still leads the independent writing rank, and that cache at $0.25 is why long agent loops can still favor Fable on a real invoice.
Who this is for
This page is for an RIA operations lead, CCO, or advisor-owner choosing a default model for knowledge memos that will be signed and stored. It assumes a household CRM already exists. Related CRM and archive choices stay on their own pages, including Redtail alternatives and compliance archiving.
Red flags: no written IPS; no reviewer who will actually read the draft; a plan to auto-send investment commentary from chat; a cutover during tax-season reviews; a belief that Astra is already on every ChatGPT Business seat on 3 September 2026; a plan to use Daybreak or Mythos 5.1 as a public picker option (both are invite-only twins with looser cyber gates, not memo SKUs).
Zapier, Make, or n8n can move a finished PDF into the CRM, retry a failed write, and keep a run log if you design observability, idempotency, access, and retention. That is a fair DIY path for one stable recipe. It is not a model picker.
When NOT to use US Tech Automations: skip it when the advisor already pastes one packet into Claude or ChatGPT and the CCO already files the Word doc, when a no-code scenario already drops the PDF on a retry, or when there is no second system to write. US Tech Automations is the hold between draft, reviewer, and archive — not a third large-language model.
Pros and cons
GPT-6 Astra
Pros
Same $10 / $50 list as Fable 5.1, with AA Intelligence cost/task at $1.67.
1,050,000-token context and 128,000 max output, with
reasoning.effortthroughmax.Stronger on OpenAI’s AutomationBench sheet if the desk later extends past memos into multi-app clicks.
Alignment “beyond authorized target” printed at 0% on OpenAI’s launch table versus an unsafeguarded prior-flagship cell; still not a substitute for your CCO.
Cons
Independent AA Intelligence (61) and GDPval-AA Elo trail Fable 5.1 for long knowledge work.
Not generally on ChatGPT on 3 September 2026; Enterprise stays off until an admin enables it.
Cache reads list at $1.00; long-context >272K doubles input/cache (1.5× output) except Codex.
No
nonereasoning; custom temperature / top_p unsupported; tools want Responses API.
Claude Fable 5.1
Pros
Independent AA Intelligence 66 and GDPval-AA Elo 1,853 — the knowledge-memo lead on this page.
Live on paid Claude, API, Bedrock, Google Cloud, and Foundry on 1 September 2026.
Cache reads $0.25; Anthropic’s typical-bill estimate is about 25% lower than Fable 5.
1,000,000-token window, 128,000 max output, June 2026 knowledge cutoff, thinking always on.
Cons
AA Intelligence cost/task $3.69 — more than Astra on that column, not less.
About 4% of AA eval output tokens routed to Opus via default safety fallback.
Forced
tool_choiceany/tool returns 400; earlier models cannot read Fable 5.1 thinking blocks.AWS Covered Model: up to 30-day retention plus AWS human review unless EFS-eligible ZDR through 31 December 2026.
FAQs
Should an RIA pick GPT-6 Astra or Claude Fable 5.1 for knowledge memos?
Pick Claude Fable 5.1 when independent GDPval and Intelligence rank are the buying test; pick GPT-6 Astra when you need the cheaper AA task column and you already have access staging under an admin.
Does GDPval Elo mean the memo is supervision-ready?
No. GDPval-AA Elo is a knowledge-work ranking. Your IPS, household ids, and reviewer still decide whether the letter can leave the building.
Is GPT-6 Astra available in ChatGPT today?
Not generally on 3 September 2026. OpenAI describes limited orgs, Trusted Access, and Foundry Limited Access, with Plus through Enterprise and API over the coming days, and Enterprise off until an admin turns it on.
How should we price Fast mode for memo batches?
Use 2× Standard if you are quoting API docs, and 2.5× Standard if you are quoting the Help Center Work/Codex rate card. Write the surface on the quote.
When NOT to use US Tech Automations for advisor memos?
Skip it when one person already pastes one packet into one model and files the signed copy, when Zapier, Make, or n8n already drops that file with a retry you trust, or when no CRM write is required.
Can we use Daybreak or Mythos 5.1 as the memo model?
No. Those twins are invite-only with looser cyber or life-science gates. They are not public memo SKUs.
Key Takeaways
Claude Fable 5.1 still leads independent knowledge-work rank (AA Intelligence 66, GDPval-AA Elo 1,853); GPT-6 Astra leads the same lab’s cost-per-task column at $1.67 versus $3.69.
List price ties at $10 / $50; cache is $1.00 versus $0.25; that cache gap is the invoice fight at memo volume.
Astra is not generally on ChatGPT on 3 September 2026; Fable 5.1 is live on paid Claude and API.
Knowledge memos remain supervised communications. A fluent draft is not a signed household letter.
Orchestration is a reviewer-and-archive hold, not a substitute for either model.
The team at US Tech Automations can map a configurable review-to-archive trail around whichever model you already picked. Review workflow pricing after you have named the model id, the CRM task field, and the human who signs the packet.
