Klaviyo Customer Agent [What It Changes]
TL;DR
Klaviyo Customer Agent is Klaviyo’s always-on service agent that talks to shoppers about orders, returns, loyalty, and subscriptions, using the same customer profiles that already power that brand’s email and SMS.
On 5 August 2026 Klaviyo agreed to buy the team and technology of Agency, the three-year-old AI customer-success startup founded by Elias Torres, and named Torres chief product officer after close, expected in Q3 2026.
The deal is not a new chatbot SKU; it is a bet that one CRM can run both the marketing agent (Composer) and the service agent (Customer Agent) on one real-time profile store for more than 205,000 paying customers.
A 10-person marketing agency, a 2-truck HVAC shop with a Shopify storefront, or a solo clinic that still answers “where is my order” by hand should treat this as a workflow question: which tickets stay human, and which the agent is allowed to close.
Key Takeaways
Customer Agent is the service half of what Klaviyo now calls an “autonomous B2C CRM.” Composer drafts campaigns; Customer Agent talks to the buyer.
The Agency acquisition folds a 25-person product team and undisclosed-price technology into that agent line; it does not, on the public record, add a priced SKU of its own.
Klaviyo’s own product page says Customer Agent resolves 65% of questions without a human and supports 113 languages, with handoff into Helpdesk when a person must take over.
Composer still stages every send for human approval. Customer Agent is built to act — start a return, check loyalty, edit an order — which is a different risk surface.
Agencies already routing intake through US Tech Automations can keep the human-approval step on refunds and keep the agent on tracking and FAQ, instead of rebuilding the stack.
What Klaviyo Customer Agent Is
Klaviyo Customer Agent is an AI service agent, built on Klaviyo’s B2C CRM, that answers shoppers and can complete retail tasks — order tracking, returns, loyalty, subscriptions, promotions — from the same profile that already holds that shopper’s purchase and campaign history.
A 10-person marketing agency that still staffs nights for “where is my order” tickets, a 2-truck HVAC shop that sells filters on Shopify and fields “is it shipped” texts, and a solo clinic that answers refill timing in the inbox are all in the same operational bucket. The work is repetitive, the data already lives in a commerce or CRM system, and the cost is a person watching a shared inbox. That is why this term matters before the rest of the piece goes into the deal.
Klaviyo’s Customer Agent product page states that Customer Agent resolves 65% of questions autonomously, with pre-built retail skills for WISMO, returns, loyalty, subscriptions, and promotions, plus 113 languages and channels across email, SMS, chat, and WhatsApp.
What Happened on 5 August 2026
Klaviyo (NYSE: KVYO) and Agency announced the same day. According to Klaviyo’s newsroom, the company stores more than nine billion consumer profiles and will close the Agency deal in Q3 2026, with Torres becoming chief product officer reporting to co-CEO Andrew Bialecki.
According to TechCrunch, Agency had raised $32 million from Sequoia, Menlo Ventures, and Felicis, and Torres will lead Agency’s 25-person team into Composer and Customer Agent. Terms were not disclosed. Bialecki told TechCrunch the aim is to bring that combination to 200,000 businesses — the same day’s Q2 release already counted more than 205,000 paying customers.
The personal history is not decoration. Torres hired Bialecki at Performable, which HubSpot later acquired; Bialecki then founded Klaviyo and took Torres as a seed angel. Torres later co-founded Drift, where a 2021 Vista majority deal took the company to unicorn status (price not disclosed in that story). Agency itself came out of stealth on 16 October 2024 with a Sequoia- and HubSpot Ventures-led $12 million seed, originally aimed at B2B customer-success managers, not DTC inboxes.
Klaviyo’s IPO on 20 September 2023 priced at $30 a share for a fully diluted valuation of about $9.2 billion, as TechCrunch’s IPO note recorded. The 5 August 2026 move is the public company buying back into Torres’s next agent company.
How Customer Agent Works in Plain Language
Klaviyo already sits on order, browse, email, and SMS events for a brand. Customer Agent is a conversational front end on that same profile. A shopper asks where an order is; the agent reads the Shopify (or other) order object, answers, and can start a return or apply a loyalty balance without opening a second tool. Skills can be pre-built or prompted in plain language. Simulations and audit trails are supposed to run before go-live. When the issue is too sharp, the agent hands off to Klaviyo Helpdesk or an existing desk with the thread attached.
Composer, the sibling, is the marketing agent. The Composer page is explicit that nothing publishes without the marketer’s approval, and that new customers get 10,000 complimentary Composer credits for up to 90 days. Customer Agent is not described that way. It is built to complete the task: check loyalty, process returns, edit orders, apply promotions. That is the constraint that just broke for a small operator — the same vendor that used to send the campaign now wants to close the ticket.
Klaviyo’s homepage currently lists Composer and Customer Agent as the two growth agents, claims 205,000+ brands across 100 countries, and still quotes 350+ integrations. The investor site as of the Q2 2026 snapshot still showed 196,000+ in the boilerplate paragraph and 205K+ in the highlight block; the 5 August earnings release is the later, numbered source.
Why This Landed Now
Two things arrived at once. First, Klaviyo had already shipped Composer, an enhanced Customer Agent (Conversational Agent Builder, custom skills, simulations, API access), and K:Social, and it had become a Shopify Sidekick and Stripe Projects partner — all listed in the 5 August 2026 Q2 release. Second, Agency’s original product was an AI stand-in for customer-success managers. Folding that team into Customer Agent is how Klaviyo tries to make the service agent as native as the email flow.
The competing story on the marketing-agency side is still a pile of tools: a helpdesk, a loyalty app, a subscription app, a form tool, a project tracker. Plutio-class agency stacks and marketing-agency automation roundups exist because that pile does not talk. Customer Agent’s pitch is that the pile collapses if the CRM already has the order.

USTA analysis: 2.2% of customers already pay like an enterprise seat
USTA analysis. Inputs are only the Q2 figures above: 205,000+ paying customers, and 4,477 customers generating over $50,000 of ARR, both as of 30 June 2026.
4,477 ÷ 205,000 = 0.0218, or about 2.2% of customers sit above the $50k ARR line. That cohort grew 36% year over year. The other ~97.8% are the small catalogs, DTC shops, and agency-run accounts that Customer Agent is actually aimed at: they already pay Klaviyo for email, and the vendor now wants them to let an agent talk to their buyers.
A second derived ratio: Agency’s 25-person team against 205,000 customers is about 8,200 customers per Agency employee if you naively assigned coverage. That is not a staffing plan; it is why the deal is a product acquisition, not a services bench. The 25 people are meant to accelerate Composer and Customer Agent, not to sit in anyone’s inbox.
What an Agency or Small Shop Should Actually Change
Customer Agent is useful only if three conditions hold. The order data is already in Klaviyo. The brand is willing to let an agent start a return or quote a loyalty balance. Someone still owns the escalation rules.
For a marketing agency running 20 Shopify accounts, the practical split is: agent on tracking and policy FAQ; human on refunds above a dollar cap, medical or legal claims, and anything that would send a promotional SMS from a service thread. Form-to-CRM intake should not dump raw web-form text into the same agent that can issue a refund. Executive-assistant automations that already draft replies should hand WISMO to Customer Agent and keep calendar and vendor mail elsewhere.
Composer remains the safer first agent because it cannot publish without a click. If a client is not ready for autonomous returns, turn on Composer, keep Helpdesk human, and add Customer Agent skills one at a time (WISMO first, returns last). Klaviyo’s pricing page still starts with a free plan at 250 profiles and 500 emails a month, plus 10,000 Composer credits; Customer Agent is a paid add-on in the plan builder, not a free default.
Shopify remains the volume channel. Klaviyo’s Shopify integration page claims over 117,000 Shopify customers and a 62% average GMV growth figure for brands that integrate — that is a vendor marketing stat, not a regulator’s number, and it is not a Customer Agent metric. Shopify Sidekick is a separate merchant-admin assistant; Klaviyo’s Q2 note only says Klaviyo launched as a Sidekick partner, not that Customer Agent is Sidekick.
Daily Harvest’s published case is still about marketing consolidation, not the agent: 4 tools into Klaviyo, 18% lower tech cost, 50+ developer hours saved per month, 67 segments in under a year, migration in 4 months with Domaine. Treat it as proof that Klaviyo already sits in the stack an agent would inherit, not as proof that Customer Agent cut those costs.
HubSpot remains the other gravity well. According to HubSpot, the free CRM is trusted by over 306,000 customers in more than 135 countries, and Professional lists an “AI customer agent.” Torres’s career already ran through HubSpot once. Agencies that bill on HubSpot plus Klaviyo should not assume the two agents share a ticket graph.
Compliance the Agent Does Not Lift
An agent that emails and texts shoppers still sits under the same laws as a human intern. Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR) has applied since 25 May 2018. According to the European Commission, GDPR entered into force on 24 May 2016 and has applied since 25 May 2018. Article 22 covers automated decision-making; Article 21 gives a right to object to direct marketing. Klaviyo’s GDPR page states it acts as a processor, hosts in AWS in the United States, uses the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and SCCs, and that non-compliance can mean penalties up to €20 million or 4% of annual global revenue — and that each merchant remains the controller.
The FTC CAN-SPAM guide is still the U.S. commercial-email rulebook. An agent that sends a “your order shipped” mail is not exempt because a model wrote it. Consent, identity, and unsubscribe still belong to the brand, not to Torres’s new product org.
Klaviyo documents 11 UI languages on the homepage FAQ and 113 languages for Customer Agent. Those are product claims. They are not a lawful-basis map.
Honest Limits
The purchase price is undisclosed. The deal had not closed as of the 5 August 2026 announcements. Agency’s original product was B2B customer success, not DTC WISMO; how much of that code lands in Customer Agent is not in the public record. The 65% autonomous-resolution figure is Klaviyo’s product-page claim, not a third-party audit. The 9 billion profile figure is a newsroom claim; the homepage also prints 7.3 billion customer profiles — do not treat those as one number. Composer’s 10,000-credit trial is not a Customer Agent trial. Competitors named in the TechCrunch story (Decagon, Sierra) were not given a chance to reply in that piece.
The state of small-business automation still includes shops that will never turn on an agent that can issue a return. That is a reasonable default.
Signal vs Speculation
Demonstrated fact (sourced). On 5 August 2026 Klaviyo agreed to acquire Agency’s team and technology, name Torres CPO after a Q3 2026 close, and fold that work into Composer and Customer Agent. The same day it reported Q2 revenue of $370.6 million, 26% growth, 205,000+ customers, and 4,477 customers above $50k ARR. Customer Agent is a live Klaviyo product that the vendor says resolves 65% of questions, acts on returns and loyalty, and hands off to Helpdesk. Composer still requires human approval before send. GDPR has applied since 2018. The deal price is unknown.
Our read (12–36 months, SMB and agencies). If the close happens on time, Customer Agent becomes the default “we already have Klaviyo, why buy a helpdesk” argument for DTC brands under a few million in revenue. Agencies will be asked to turn it on as part of retainers, the way they were asked to turn on SMS. The operators who get hurt are the ones who let the agent issue refunds before they set a dollar cap and a human queue. The operators who benefit are the ones who park WISMO on the agent and keep the creative team on campaigns. US Tech Automations can sit beside that split: form and ticket intake on one graph, Klaviyo’s agent on the commerce profile, a confirm step before money moves.
Our read, continued. In 12 months, expect “Customer Agent included?” to show up on agency RFPs the way “do you do SMS?” did. In 36 months, expect the interesting fight to be over which agent owns the customer — Shopify Sidekick in the admin, Klaviyo Customer Agent in the inbox, or a vertical agent in the POS — not over whether an agent exists.

Frequently asked questions
Is Klaviyo Customer Agent the same thing as Composer?
No. Composer builds and stages marketing campaigns and requires a human click before anything goes out. Customer Agent talks to shoppers and is built to complete service tasks such as returns and loyalty checks.
Did Klaviyo already ship Customer Agent before buying Agency?
Yes. The 5 August 2026 Q2 release lists Customer Agent enhancements (Conversational Agent Builder, custom skills, simulations, API access) as a product announcement in the same quarter as the Agency agreement. The acquisition is meant to accelerate that line, not to create it from zero.
When does the Agency deal close?
Klaviyo’s newsroom says the transaction is expected to close in Q3 2026. It had not closed as of the 5 August 2026 announcement. Torres becomes CPO following closing.
Should a 10-person agency turn Customer Agent on for every client?
No. Turn it on where order data already lives in Klaviyo and where the client has written escalation rules. Keep refunds and legal claims on a human queue. Use Composer first if the client only wants draft help.
Does an AI agent change CAN-SPAM or GDPR duties?
No. The merchant remains the controller. GDPR has applied since 25 May 2018, including rules on consent, access, erasure, and automated decisions. U.S. commercial email still follows CAN-SPAM. An agent that sends mail or SMS does not get a separate statute.
Agencies that already file leads through US Tech Automations can keep that intake on a form-to-CRM path and treat Customer Agent as the downstream commerce speaker, not as the system of record. Map the confirm step on the agentic-workflows canvas so a return over your cap never fires without a person. Home for that wiring is US Tech Automations.
