Recurly Alternatives: 4 Picks for 2026
You are leaving Recurly because a plan change, a failed renewal, or a close still needs a person in the middle. The four picks on this page are Chargebee, Maxio, Stripe Billing, and Workato — not a fifth billing brand, and not a ranked trophy case.
Chargebee, Maxio, and Stripe Billing can take the subscription object. Workato cannot. Workato is the orchestration layer you use when Recurly can stay and the work is the handoff into books, CRM, and support.
None of those four publishes a list price we are allowed to print here. Ask each vendor for a quote that names seats, modules, and Recurly migration, then compare the workflow — not a number you cannot defend to a partner. When you are ready to price the automation around that quote, use US Tech Automations pricing.
36.2 million U.S. small businesses.
62.3 million small-business employees in 2022.
Publishing jobs: 893.3 thousand in July 2026.
How we evaluated
We scored each pick the way a partner will score it in a meeting: who owns the catalog, who retries a failed card, who books revenue, and who has to write code when a SKU changes.
Recurly is a subscription management platform. Its docs cover plan management, recurring billing, payments, and smart dunning, with separate Commerce, Engage, and RevRec lines. Versioned terms such as price and billing interval apply to new subscribers only; existing subscribers keep what they signed. Edit the catalog carelessly during a move and the invoice file splits.
We did not score analyst badges or unpublished list prices. A figure next to a vendor name is something we opened on an official page and can link, or it is omitted. For Chargebee, Maxio, Stripe Billing, and Workato, ask for a quote. Seats or task volume, modules (rev rec, CPQ, entitlements, tax), dual-run help, and whether payment tokens can move without a card re-entry are what usually drive that number.
The operating backdrop is not a SaaS census. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy, there are 36.2 million small businesses in the United States. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy, U.S. small business employment grew 13.1 percent from 1998 to 2022 and reached 62.3 million employees in 2022. Most Recurly shops we see sit in that employer-size band, which is why a migration that needs a standing billing team will fail the partner test.
We also checked whether the replacement can sit next to the rest of a SaaS stack. If Recurly invoices still need a person to post into QuickBooks, read Connect Recurly to Quickbooks Saas: 14 Manual Journal 2026 before you rip out the billing engine — the journal may be the cheaper fix. If failed renewals become tickets, the support tool matters as much as dunning; we compared that stack in Freshworks vs Zendesk for SaaS Support. If trials never provision seats, that is an onboarding workflow, covered in SaaS Onboarding Automation: 3 Tools Compared.
US Tech Automations evaluates a Recurly exit by mapping each plan code, add-on, coupon, and webhook to one owner before anyone opens a vendor sandbox. That map is the artifact you take into the quote call.
1. Chargebee — who it is actually for
Chargebee is for a SaaS team that wants the catalog, the checkout, the retry, and the revenue subledger in one vendor conversation.
Use it when packaging still changes faster than engineering can ship and finance is tired of rebuilding recognition in a workbook. Chargebee's public set covers entitlements, catalog, usage-based billing, CPQ, trials, invoicing, tax, checkout, retention, receivables, accounting sync, and RevRec that Chargebee says follows ASC 606 and IFRS 15. Revive and Smart Dunning sit inside billing, so a retry can see invoice context rather than only a gateway decline.
It is a weaker fit when payments already settle on Stripe and you do not want a second billing database. Chargebee RevRec can ingest Stripe Billing — a module, not a reason to buy two engines. If the only broken path is Recurly-to-GL, that is automation, not a replatform.
Ask Chargebee to quote seats, modules (Billing, Receivables, RevRec, CPQ, tax), dual-run, and how Recurly subscriptions, add-ons, and payment methods move. Recurly docs warn that deleted plans cannot be reactivated and tied subscriptions cannot be edited — migrate those while the plan still exists.
2. Maxio — who it is actually for
Maxio is for a sales-led or hybrid B2B SaaS shop where the close is the pain, not the hosted payment page.
Use it when sales sells ramps, minimums, and usage, and the controller still stitches ARR, DSO, and deferred revenue from exports. Maxio's site puts contract billing, invoicing, GAAP and IFRS, usage metering, a self-serve portal, a catalog, payment integrations, and reports such as ARR summary and DSO on one platform. Entitlements Management defines rights in the catalog, resolves them on create, upgrade, or downgrade, and returns them in one API call so the product can cut access when a payment is missed.
It is a weaker fit for a self-serve app that lives on checkout and retries, with a finance person who will never open a revenue subledger. Maxio integrates; it is not Workato.
Ask Maxio to quote entities, modules (billing, rev rec, CPQ, entitlements, wallets, payments), connectors, and Recurly historical invoices. Ask whether entitlements sit in the base SKU.
3. Stripe Billing — who it is actually for
Stripe Billing is for a team that already thinks in Stripe objects and wants subscriptions, invoices, and retries in the same API as payments.
Stripe's billing docs cover subscriptions, usage-based billing, invoicing, quotes, a customer portal, smart retries, webhooks, tax, and a documented path to migrate subscriptions. Models listed there include flat-rate, per-seat, usage-based, tiered, variable, and multi-currency. Revenue recognition is a related Stripe product — do not assume it sits on every Billing invoice.
It is a weaker fit when finance owns packaging and will not let prices live in engineering tickets. Chargebee and Maxio sell catalog-and-close to that buyer. It is also a weaker fit when product needs an entitlements graph without Stripe-to-app glue.
Ask Stripe to quote Billing, Tax, Invoicing, Revenue Recognition, and recovery as separate lines. Ask how Recurly customer IDs map, how open invoices dual-run, and whether cards can move under the current gateway.
4. Workato — who it is actually for
Workato is for a team whose Recurly object is acceptable and whose month is lost in the systems around it.
Workato is integration and process automation: a control plane (access, audit, approvals) and an execution plane (recipes, event triggers). Workato's Recurly page states there is no designated connector and that you connect through a public API, including HTTP. Treat that as a build, not a Recurly tile.
Use it when Recurly invoice paid should post to the general ledger, a failed payment should open a ticket and pause provisioning, or a cancellation should cut entitlements the same hour. Those jobs are why this page points at finance-accounting agents and agentic workflows on US Tech Automations — the recipe still needs an owner.
Do not use Workato as the billing engine. It will not replace plans, dunning, or hosted checkout. If catalog and retries are why you opened this page, pick one of the first three.
Ask Workato to quote task volume, environments, governance, and HTTP work against Recurly's API.
Side-by-side comparison

Pros and cons
Chargebee
Pros: Catalog, entitlements, checkout, tax, retries, and RevRec are one conversation, which is what a partner wants when the last close slipped because billing and accounting disagreed. Revive can use billing context on a failed payment instead of a fixed day-3/day-7/day-14 clock. Chargebee RevRec can also sit on Stripe Billing if you later split the stack.
Cons: You still have to migrate Recurly objects. List price is not published here, so you cannot take a number into the partner meeting until a quote lands. If your only pain is posting Recurly into QuickBooks, you may be buying a platform to fix an export.
Maxio
Pros: The pitch matches a controller's week — contract billing, usage, GAAP/IFRS, ARR, DSO, entitlements that follow the invoice. Multi-entity catalogs and gateways are called out for groups that already have more than one subsidiary.
Cons: It is not the PLG checkout story. Entitlements are new enough that you should make the API part of the proof, not the brochure. Same quote rule: no list price on this page.
Stripe Billing
Pros: If payments already settle on Stripe, Billing keeps customers, invoices, retries, and the portal in one object model, and Stripe documents a subscription migration. Engineering can own pricing models without standing up a second vendor's data model.
Cons: Finance-owned packaging and a named entitlements graph are less obvious than on Chargebee or Maxio. Revenue recognition is a related product — put it on the quote or you will rebuild schedules. No list price printed here.
Workato
Pros: You can keep Recurly. Recipes can carry the invoice into books, the failure into support, and the new seat into the product. Governance (RBAC, audit, approvals) is the point of the control plane.
Cons: Workato is not a Recurly replacement. Recurly has no designated Workato connector, so HTTP and Recurly's API are the job. Task-based quoting is a different conversation from billing modules.
What switching actually costs
The cash line is the quote you do not have yet. Ask each vendor for seats or tasks, modules, and migration professional services. Do not accept a verbal "it depends" without those three lines. We are not printing a substitute figure.
The operational cost is data, retraining, and a month of dual-run.
Data: customers, plan codes (25-character Recurly identifiers), add-ons, coupons, terms Recurly froze at signup, invoices, dunning state, and payment tokens. Recurly price segments do not print on invoices; export the segment code from the API if you used them for tests. Deleted plans cannot be revived — migrate those subscriptions while the plan still exists.
Retraining: finance on invoices and recognition, support on the portal and cancel path, engineering on webhooks. According to the Federal Trade Commission, the Commission announced its final click-to-cancel rule on October 16, 2024. Ask each billing vendor how a subscriber ends a term in the hosted portal versus your app, and put that in the support runbook.
The month: overlap one billing cycle. Recurly still charges the cohort until you cut tokens; the new engine invoices in shadow; finance matches totals and tax daily. US Tech Automations dual-runs Recurly and replacement webhooks for that cycle so a missed paid event is a matched row, not a surprise on the bank feed. Keep the Recurly-to-QuickBooks journal path alive until the new engine's accounting sync has survived a close.
| Workstream | What actually moves | What to put on the quote | Published vendor fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catalog | Plans, add-ons, coupons, price segments | Mapping hours; who types plan codes | not published |
| Subscriptions | Active terms Recurly froze at signup | Dual-run of one billing cycle | not published |
| Payments | Tokens, retries, dunning state | Gateway strategy; customer re-auth if tokens cannot move | not published |
| Revenue | Open invoices, deferred balances, tax | Rev rec module yes/no; first close together | not published |
| People | Finance, support, engineering | Training and a named owner per webhook | not published |
Vendor fees: not published for Chargebee, Maxio, Stripe Billing, or Workato. Calendar is one billing cycle of dual-run, not a vendor SLA.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, real GDP increased at an annual rate of 2.1 percent in the first quarter of 2026, with private services-producing industries up 0.8 percent. A cutover still has to close on that same calendar.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Statistics of U.S. Businesses data are available approximately 2 to 2 1/2 years after each reference year; the latest annual tables on that site are the 2022 release. Use your invoice file as the system of record rather than waiting for a newer official SaaS census.
Verdict
Pick Chargebee if product still changes packaging in public and you want checkout, retries, tax, and RevRec under one vendor you can put in a partner memo.
Pick Maxio if the partner who has to sign is the controller, and ARR, DSO, GAAP/IFRS, and entitlements that follow the invoice are the reason Recurly no longer fits.
Pick Stripe Billing if you already run Stripe payments, engineering will own the catalog, and you will put Tax and Revenue Recognition on the same quote rather than assuming they appear on every invoice.
Pick Workato if Recurly billing is fine and the month is lost in QuickBooks, CRM, and support. It is a companion, not a Recurly clone, and Recurly will be an HTTP API on that tenant until Workato ships a designated connector.
Chargebee and Maxio are close. If both demos work, choose on the bottleneck you can show in last month's close: a checkout/retry hole points at Chargebee; a reporting/recognition hole points at Maxio. Stripe Billing is not close to those two unless payments already live there. Workato is not close to any of them.
Stay on Recurly when the catalog still fits and the only broken path is a journal or a ticket — those are the Recurly-to-QuickBooks, support, and onboarding jobs linked above, not a four-vendor bake-off.
When the quote is in hand, price the dual-run and the webhook map on the pricing page. Mid-size teams can start from solutions for midsized companies.
FAQs
Can we keep Recurly and still change the stack?
Yes — that is the Workato path, or a smaller automation, when the catalog and dunning still work. If plans, retries, or recognition are the failure, pick Chargebee, Maxio, or Stripe Billing and keep Recurly only for the dual-run month.
What should a Chargebee, Maxio, Stripe Billing, or Workato quote include?
Seats or tasks, named modules, sandbox access, Recurly migration (customers, subscriptions, invoices, payment methods), and who owns the catalog map. If a line is missing, the number is not ready for a partner.
Does Stripe Billing cover usage-based SaaS the way Recurly plans do?
Stripe Billing docs include usage-based billing and several other pricing models, plus a migrate-subscriptions guide. Recurly plans support fixed, ramp, and usage-based pricing with add-ons. Map meters and add-ons explicitly; do not assume a one-click equivalent.
How long should we dual-run Recurly against the new engine?
Overlap one full billing cycle so renewals, dunning, tax, and recognition all happen twice and can be matched. That is an operating choice, not a published vendor duration, and it is the month you should put in the project plan.
Who owns cancellation after click-to-cancel?
Your support and product teams own the customer-facing path; the billing vendor owns the portal and API. Ask each vendor to show the cancel control in a demo, then train support the same week you change onboarding.
Is Workato a Recurly alternative or a Recurly companion?
A companion. Workato's Recurly page says there is no designated connector and points you at the public API. Use it to move events into books and support; do not use it to issue the subscription invoice.
Key Takeaways
The four Recurly alternatives on this page are Chargebee, Maxio, Stripe Billing, and Workato — exactly those four.
Chargebee, Maxio, and Stripe Billing can replace the subscription object; Workato orchestrates around Recurly and has no designated Recurly connector.
Print no list price for those four vendors; ask for seats, modules, and migration on the quote.
Recurly freezes price and interval on existing subscribers and will not revive a deleted plan — migrate while the plan still exists.
Dual-run one billing cycle with matched webhooks before you cut payment tokens.
Chargebee and Maxio are close; pick on checkout/retries versus close/reporting. Stripe Billing fits an existing Stripe payments team. Workato fits a Recurly keep.
Put the dual-run and catalog map on US Tech Automations pricing once the vendor quote is in writing.
