Admin Assist [What It Changes]
TL;DR
Admin Assist is Gemini help inside the Google Admin console: a side panel for step-by-step tasks plus search AI Overviews that summarize Help Center articles, announced on August 17, 2026.
It is on by default for super admins on Business Starter, Standard, and Plus; delegated admins do not get it; people who only use Gmail or Drive are not given a new setting.
It does not replace MFA, SSO, Marketplace allowlists, or a written security checklist; it sits on top of those console jobs and talks you through them.
A 2-truck HVAC shop, a 10-person agency, or a solo-run clinic already paying for Workspace Business gets this on the same seat that already runs email — no Copilot-style add-on line appears on the launch note.
Key Takeaways
The constraint that broke is tab-switching: admins used to bounce between the console, Help Center articles, and extra browser tabs to finish one policy change.
Eligibility is narrow and named: super admins only, Business editions only, Rapid Release and Scheduled Release both listed as available now on the launch post.
Price context matters more than the brand name. Workspace Business already includes Gemini in Gmail on Starter; Admin Assist is console-side help on those same Business SKUs, not a new SKU.
Security work still belongs to you. CISA still tells small firms to require MFA, and CISA still publishes Google Workspace configuration baselines. Admin Assist can explain a click path; it does not certify that your tenant matches a baseline.
Treat console prompts like privileged commands. Do not paste recovery codes, bank logins, or donor lists into the side panel, and do not wire those prompts into an outbound agent run.
What Admin Assist actually is
Admin Assist is Google’s name for Gemini-powered help built into the Google Workspace Admin console, so the person who runs the company Google account can ask for step-by-step account and security guidance without leaving the console.
If you run a 2-truck HVAC shop, a 10-person marketing agency, or a clinic where the office manager is also the “IT person,” this is aimed at you, not at a 200-seat security operations center. That person already resets passwords, turns on 2-Step Verification, and allowlists a form tool when a vendor asks. They do that work between dispatching trucks, sending invoices, or checking patients in. The old path was search, open a Help Center tab, lose the console, come back, miss a checkbox, and call a nephew. Admin Assist keeps the help in the same window as the setting.
Google’s own product page for the Admin console still describes that console as the place to manage users, devices, apps, and data from one interface. Admin Assist does not replace that console. It sits on it. The August 17, 2026 Google Workspace Updates post is the primary source for the term, the two features, the Business-only limit, and the super-admin-only rule.
This is the same class of job as other small-business automation work already on this site: the office manager who wants executive assistant tasks off their plate, and the owner reading the state of small-business automation. Admin Assist is the console coach for Google account chores. It is not a CRM, a payroll run, or a donor appeal.
What Google shipped on August 17, 2026
As of August 17, 2026, Google said it was introducing “new admin assist capabilities,” bringing two Gemini-powered tools into the Admin console: a side panel and AI Overviews. According to Google Workspace Updates, the launch includes 2 Gemini-powered Admin Assist capabilities, and they are available for Google Workspace Business editions only.
Two Gemini tools now sit in the Admin console. That sentence is the extractable fact from the same launch note: side panel plus AI Overviews, not a new admin product SKU.
The side panel is reached from the Google Bar on most Admin console pages. Super admins can ask for help with complex tasks, hear administrative best practices, and get interactive step-by-step guidance. AI Overviews fire when you type a question in the main Admin console search bar. Google says that search then synthesizes Help Center articles into conversational summaries, with answers and “actionable next steps” beside them.
The launch note is blunt about who is in. The feature is on by default for super admins with eligible Business plans. It is not available to delegated admins. There is no end-user setting. Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains are both listed as available now. Availability is named as Business Starter, Standard, and Plus. Enterprise is not on that list.
Google’s marketing line on the post is that these features act as a “personal technical co-worker.” Read that as in-console coaching, not as a second human on payroll, and not as a signed-off change control board.
A public Gemini changelog at Releasebot listed 404 curated updates as of September 2, 2026, which is a feed count, not a quality score. Use the Workspace Updates post as the primary for Admin Assist itself.

How the two tools work in plain language
The side panel is a chat strip on the console. You stay on the users, security, or apps page you were already on. You ask a question in ordinary language: how to require 2-Step Verification, how to add a user, how to stop staff from installing random Marketplace apps. The model is supposed to walk the clicks for that console, not send you to a 40-page PDF.
AI Overviews are the search-bar cousin. The Admin console already had search. The new behavior, per Google, is that a question in that bar can pull Help Center articles into a short spoken-style answer with next steps. The old failure mode was ten blue links and a tab explosion. The new failure mode, if the summary is wrong, is a confident short answer. You still have to look at the actual control before you click Save.
That is why the sign-in help still matters. The Admin console lives at admin.google.com, it is only available on an admin account, and Google says you need to sign in to the Admin console after each hour of use. Admin Assist does not remove that hourly re-auth. It rides inside a session that Google already treats as sensitive.
Google’s prebuilt administrator roles page still says at least one user must be a super administrator and recommends at least two so one can reset the other. Admin Assist is gated to that super-admin class. If your office manager is a Help Desk admin who can only reset non-admin passwords, the launch note says they do not get these Gemini tools.
SSO remains a separate, click-heavy job. Google’s SSO help says you can create up to 1,000 SAML SSO profiles, assign them by organizational unit or group, and still keep a legacy profile. Admin Assist can talk you through that maze. It does not fill in your identity provider’s certificate for you, and it does not sign the SAML contract.
Marketplace allowlisting is the other weekly trap. Google’s allowlist help walks the Apps list, organizational units, and the rule that removing an app from the allowlist cuts user access even if the app is still installed. That is the exact moment a 10-person agency installs a form-to-CRM add-on and accidentally opens it to every intern. Admin Assist can explain the allowlist. You still choose who is in the OU.
The Workspace Marketplace is where those apps live. Developers extend the same suite through Google Workspace APIs, including the Admin SDK for user and audit work. Admin Assist is a console coach, not a replacement for those APIs, and not a replacement for a written allowlist.
Why a shop with no IT desk should care
The person who will actually use this is already doing three jobs. In an HVAC shop they dispatch, invoice, and keep the Google account from being phished. In an agency they run ads, send decks, and approve Marketplace apps. In a clinic they book rooms, chase superbills, and turn on MFA because a billing vendor demanded it.
CISA’s small-business page says no business is too small to be a target. According to CISA, the FBI reported over $2.7 billion in 2024 losses from business email compromise alone. That figure is about BEC, not about Admin Assist. It is why an office manager staring at the Admin console on a Saturday is not a hobby. Gmail is the front door. The console is the locksmith bench.
CISA’s Secure Our World list is still four daily habits: recognize phishing, use strong passwords, turn on MFA, and update software. The MFA page walks settings, a second factor, and authenticator apps that generate a new code every 30 seconds. Admin Assist can help you find the Workspace control that requires that second factor. It does not turn MFA on for your bank, your payroll host, or your donor platform.
The SBA’s manage-your-business guide puts cybersecurity next to payroll, taxes, and AI risk on the same owner checklist. That is the operating picture: the owner is not staffing a SOC. They are trying not to lose email, invoices, and patient or donor records in one phished password.
Census Statistics of U.S. Businesses still publishes firm, establishment, and payroll counts by enterprise size; the program page lists latest data as 2022. Most of those firms will never hire a full-time Google admin. They will have a super admin who also orders parts.
Shops that already push invoice PDFs through US Tech Automations extraction can leave that flow in place and use Admin Assist only when the office manager is inside the Admin console.
Price context, not a product pitch
Admin Assist does not show a separate line item on the public Workspace pricing page. It ships, per the launch note, to Business Starter, Standard, and Plus. Those SKUs already have list prices, storage, and Meet caps you can read without a sales call.
According to Google Workspace pricing, Business Starter lists $7.00 per user per month after the intro window, with price listed as USD and excluding tax. Starter list price is $7.00 per user per month. The same pricing page shows Business Standard at $14.00, Business Plus at $22.00, a 300-user cap on those Business plans, 30 GB / 2 TB / 5 TB pooled storage, and Meet caps of 100 / 150 / 500 participants. A 14-day trial is offered on that page. Intro discounts (20% or 50% for a dated window) are marketing overlays; the list prices above are the ongoing figures on the table.
Google’s security overview repeats a separate, older figure: AI threat defenses in Gmail block more than 99.9% of spam, phishing, and malware. Gmail AI blocks more than 99.9% of phishing. That security page is about mail filtering, not about Admin Assist accuracy. Do not merge the two.
Microsoft’s admin surface is a useful contrast, not a conversion argument. Microsoft Learn describes the Microsoft 365 admin center as the place to add users, assign licenses, reset passwords, and open a Copilot workspace in the left nav. Microsoft 365 Copilot is sold as AI in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, with Work IQ as the workplace intelligence layer. That is end-user work AI. Admin Assist is console-admin help.
According to Microsoft 365 Copilot pricing, Copilot Business is listed at $18.00 per user per month on the current yearly promo (from $21.00). According to Microsoft 365 business plans, Microsoft 365 Business Standard with Copilot is $23.50 per user per month paid yearly, Business Premium with Copilot is $32.00, and Business Basic is $7.00, each with a 1–300 employee range on that table.

| Workspace Business Starter | 7.00 | 30 GB | 100 | 300 |

USTA analysis
USTA analysis. This block uses only list prices already cited above. It is a desk-calculator comparison, not a claim that Admin Assist and Copilot do the same work.
Inputs: Google Workspace Business Standard = $14.00 per user per month (Workspace pricing). Microsoft 365 Business Standard with Copilot = $23.50 per user per month paid yearly (Microsoft 365 plans). Copilot Business add-on promo = $18.00 per user per month (Copilot pricing). Admin Assist ships inside Business Starter, Standard, and Plus with no separate add-on price on the August 17, 2026 launch note.
For a 10-person HVAC shop on Workspace Business Standard: 10 × 14.00 = $140 per month list, or $1,680 per year, before tax. The same headcount on Microsoft 365 Business Standard with Copilot: 10 × 23.50 = $235 per month, or $2,820 per year. Subtract: 235 − 140 = $95 per month, or $1,140 per year. That delta is the full-suite list gap, not an Admin Assist surcharge.
If the only new need is console-side help for one super admin who already sits on Workspace Business, the launch note implies $0 extra for Admin Assist. One Copilot Business add-on seat at the promo rate is 18.00 × 12 = $216 per year. 216 − 0 = $216 per year as the add-on gap for that single seat. Copilot still does Word/Excel/Teams work that Admin Assist does not. Admin Assist still does Admin console walkthroughs that Copilot’s app layer is not described as doing on Microsoft’s Copilot marketing page.
Do not treat $1,140 or $216 as savings you have already banked. They are list-price gaps from public pages on the dates those pages were opened.
A 10-person agency routing form fills into a CRM with US Tech Automations still needs a super admin to allowlist Marketplace apps and set sharing; Admin Assist is the console coach for that step.
What it does not replace
Google’s Admin console page claims “10x” administrator efficiency as a marketing headline on the English Admin console product page. That is Google’s phrase, not a measured Admin Assist result, and it is not an Admin Assist SLA. Keep it in the marketing bucket.
A commissioned Forrester TEI study (November 2023, composite of 10,000 office plus 10,000 frontline workers) is about Workspace as a suite, not about Admin Assist. According to Forrester, that composite showed a 336% ROI, $57.3 million NPV, benefits PV of $74.3 million, costs of $17.1 million, and payback under 6 months. The same study lists 90% less time to configure workstations and a 20% reduction in IT tickets as modeled admin effects. Google’s TEI blog summary repeats the 336% and $57.3 million figures. Those numbers predate Admin Assist and describe a 20,000-person composite. A 12-person clinic should not paste them into a board deck as its own payback.
CISA’s SCuBA project still publishes secure configuration baselines for Google Workspace and Microsoft 365, with ScubaGoggles (2023) as the no-cost Google Workspace assessment tool. Admin Assist does not mark your tenant against those baselines. If you want a score, run the baseline tool. If you want a click path explained, ask the side panel, then check the control.
NIST CSF 2.0 remains the public risk framework. According to NIST, draft SP 1353 (dated August 19, 2026) includes 3 notional use cases for using AI on CSF analysis, with comments due October 15, 2026. That draft is about using AI to draft CSF profiles. It is not Google’s Admin Assist spec. It is the reminder that “ask the model to write my security policy” is now a documented pattern with caution marks, not a substitute for an owner who accepts the risk.
Privacy is a separate console. Google’s Generative AI Privacy Hub (last updated August 14, 2026 on the hub itself) says Gemini in Workspace prompts and responses are retained 90 days to indefinite as determined by admins, the Gemini app up to 36 months, and Gemini Notebook prompts are not retained after the session. Default auto-delete for Gemini app history is 18 months, with 3 / 18 / 36 month choices, and 72 hours of storage when history is off. The English AI privacy page repeats that Workspace customer content is not used to train generative models outside the domain without permission, and lists ISO 42001, BSI C5, and FedRAMP High among Gemini certifications. Google Cloud’s privacy commitments state that customer data is yours, is not used for ads targeting, and is not sold.
Admin Assist is Gemini in a privileged console. Treat prompts there as privileged. Client-side encryption, per the Privacy Hub, can block Gemini from reading that content because Google systems cannot access CSE data. If a clinic encrypts charts that way, do not expect the side panel to quote those files.
Keep donor reactivation sequences on US Tech Automations; do not paste super-admin prompts or recovery codes into those agent runs. The same rule applies to lapsed-donor appeal flows and to any Givebutter or Bloomerang migration where an office manager is also the Workspace super admin.
Signal vs Speculation
Demonstrated fact (sourced): Google announced Admin Assist on August 17, 2026, with a Gemini side panel and AI Overviews in the Admin console, on by default for super admins on Business Starter, Standard, and Plus, not available to delegated admins, with no end-user setting, live on Rapid and Scheduled Release. Public list prices for those Business SKUs and for Microsoft Copilot SKUs are as cited. CISA, NIST, Forrester TEI, SBA, and Census pages say what they say, on the URLs above, and none of them measure Admin Assist accuracy.
Our read: If Google keeps Admin Assist on the Business SKUs and keeps Enterprise off the launch list, the next 12 months are a small-business console story, not a Fortune 500 SOC story. The office manager becomes the user. That is the audience that used to fail open on Marketplace apps and MFA.
Our read: If AI Overviews stay glued to Help Center articles, the useful outcome in 12–36 months is fewer abandoned security tasks, not fewer security incidents. BEC losses on CISA’s page will not move because a side panel exists. They move if MFA is actually required and recovery options are actually locked.
Our read: If delegated admins remain excluded, shops will either promote the office manager to super admin (more blast radius) or leave help in a role that cannot open the panel (the feature never fires). Watch that privilege choice more than the model name.
Our read: Competitors will keep selling work AI (Copilot in Word and Teams) while Google just put a coach on the admin bench for Business plans. Those are different seats. A clinic can use both stacks; a 10-person shop will pick one suite and live with the console it got.
Our read: NIST’s SP 1353 draft is a tell that “use a model to draft your CSF profile” will be a normal, caution-tagged practice by 2027. Pair that habit with a human who can say no. Admin Assist is the console-scale version of the same habit.
What to do this week
Sign in as a super admin, confirm you have a second super admin as Google’s roles page recommends, and try one real question in the side panel: require 2-Step Verification for the whole company. Read the clicks. Then open the actual 2-Step Verification setting and confirm the control matches what the panel said.
Run the same test on Marketplace allowlisting before you install the next form add-on. If the panel says “allow for everyone,” stop and scope an OU.
If you already automate intake, keep those flows on the homepage product index and on agentic workflows. Admin Assist is the console layer, not the document layer.
FAQs
What is Admin Assist?
Admin Assist is Gemini-powered help inside the Google Workspace Admin console, made of a side panel and search AI Overviews, as named on Google’s August 17, 2026 Workspace Updates post. It is meant to walk super admins through account and security tasks without leaving the console. It is not a separate Workspace edition and not an end-user Gmail feature.
Who can use Admin Assist in Google Workspace?
Super admins on Business Starter, Standard, and Plus, with the feature on by default, per the launch note. Delegated admins are excluded. End users who only have Gmail or Drive do not get a setting. Enterprise is not listed on that availability block.
Does Admin Assist cost extra on Business Starter?
The launch note does not list a separate add-on price. Business Starter’s public list price is $7.00 per user per month on Google’s pricing page. Treat Admin Assist as included on eligible Business plans until Google publishes a different SKU. Compare that to Microsoft’s Copilot Business add-on, which does carry its own price.
Can delegated admins use the Gemini side panel?
No. The launch note says the feature is not available to delegated admins. If your Help Desk admin is the person who resets passwords all day, they will not see this Gemini help unless you change their role. Changing them to super admin also expands what they can break.
Does Admin Assist change settings for staff who only use Gmail?
Google says there is no end-user setting and no end-user impact. Staff keep their Gmail, Drive, and Meet as before. The change is in the Admin console session of a super admin. Mail filtering figures such as Gmail’s 99.9% phishing block rate live on the security page and are not an Admin Assist metric.
How does Admin Assist differ from Microsoft 365 Copilot?
Admin Assist is console-admin coaching in Google’s Admin console. Microsoft 365 Copilot is sold as AI inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, with a Copilot area in the Microsoft 365 admin center. Copilot Business is priced as its own add-on on Microsoft’s pricing page. The products overlap as “AI at work” in ads; they do not overlap as the same button on the same screen.
Should a clinic turn Admin Assist off?
The launch note says it is on by default for eligible super admins and does not document an off switch in that post. A clinic that uses client-side encryption should not expect Gemini to read those files, per the Privacy Hub. A clinic that is in HIPAA scope should read Google’s HIPAA language on the AI privacy pages with counsel, not treat a side panel as a Business Associate workflow. Turning off other Gemini services is a separate Admin console job from this launch.
Does Admin Assist replace CISA or NIST checklists?
No. CISA still publishes four essentials and Workspace baselines through SCuBA. NIST still publishes CSF 2.0 and is taking comments on an AI-for-CSF quick-start. Use Admin Assist to find a control. Use the baseline and the framework to decide whether the control is enough.
Glossary
Admin Assist — Google’s August 2026 name for Gemini help in the Admin console (side panel plus AI Overviews) for Business-edition super admins.
Side panel — Chat help opened from the Google Bar on most Admin console pages, for step-by-step admin tasks.
AI Overviews — Search-bar summaries that turn Help Center articles into short answers with next steps inside the Admin console.
Super admin — The prebuilt role with full Admin console and Admin API access; Google recommends at least two.
Delegated admin — Any admin role below super admin (Help Desk, User Management, Services, and others); excluded from Admin Assist on the launch note.
Google Admin console — admin.google.com, the tenant control plane for users, devices, apps, and data.
Business editions — Workspace Business Starter, Standard, and Plus, capped at 300 users on the public pricing page.
SCuBA — CISA’s Secure Cloud Business Applications project, with Google Workspace baselines and the ScubaGoggles assessment tool.
Google put a coach on the Admin console for the person who already runs the company Google account. Use it to finish MFA, allowlists, and user adds without a tab pile. Keep the actual Save click in human hands. If you want the rest of the office work — intake, follow-ups, document routing — on a workflow you can inspect, open the agentic workflow builder and map the steps you still run by hand.
