Ahrefs vs Semrush for Ecommerce Stores: 3-Way 2026

Sep 4, 2026

Ahrefs and Semrush are SEO research suites. For an ecommerce store they are how you find product and category queries, inspect competitors, crawl templates, and (increasingly) log AI-answer prompts. Neither one is your PIM, your Shopify theme, or your Merchant Center feed. The third seat in this 3-way is the orchestration layer that moves a keyword list into product copy, schema, and inventory-aware pages without silent failures.

TL;DR: Ahrefs Lite is $129/month with 100,000 crawl credits and 750 tracked keywords. Semrush's SEO plan is $139/month ($117.33 billed annually) with 500 tracked keywords and 5 sites. Semrush is the broader marketing cloud (AI visibility SKUs, local, content). Ahrefs is the crawler-and-index shop (Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit). For SKU catalogs, crawl credits and template diagnostics usually matter more than an extra 200 keywords. Buy one suite; do not pay both unless two teams refuse to share a login.

Ecommerce SEO Suites Are Not Interchangeable

Product SEO is template SEO plus inventory truth. You need to know which category terms you can win, which product URLs are thin, and whether Google can show price and availability. Google Search Central splits Product structured data into product snippets (non-purchase pages) and merchant listings (pages where customers can buy), which can surface price, availability, and review ratings in Search.

AhrefsBot in mobile robots.txt: 8.8% according to HTTP Archive (2024), up from 5.3% in 2022. Stores already treat Ahrefs as a crawler they must allow or block. That is not a reason to buy Ahrefs by itself, but it is evidence of how the market uses it.

On our 12,514-page corpus counted 2026-08-24, COMPARISON earn rate: 17.8% according to US Tech Automations (2026), versus a 12.2% site base. That first-party mix is why this page is a comparison with a third column, not a two-logo brochure.

Key Takeaways

  • Ahrefs Lite $129 vs Semrush SEO $139 ($117.33 annual) is a $10/month sticker gap; crawl credits (100,000 vs Semrush site audit on the SEO plan) are the real ecommerce differentiator.

  • Semrush Starter at $199/month ($165.17 annual) adds 50 AI prompts; Ahrefs Lite includes 5 tracked AI prompts, with Brand Radar from $199/month as an add-on.

  • Neither suite writes product copy or patches JSON-LD when price and availability drift.

  • Category-page technique still matters; see Amazon category page SEO.

  • US Tech Automations can watch Shopify products/update, compare the live JSON-LD to the PIM, and open a human task when they disagree.

Ahrefs Lite: $129/month according to Ahrefs (2026). Semrush SEO annual: $117.33/month according to Semrush (2026). Ahrefs says it never runs discounts; annual saves up to 17%. Semrush advertises up to 17% annual too. Do not treat a coupon blog as either vendor's price.

Ahrefs for Stores

Best fit: catalogs that live and die on technical templates, internal link waste, and competitor backlink gaps. Site Audit credits at Lite (100,000) and Standard (500,000) are the SKUs merchandisers feel. Keywords Explorer and Site Explorer remain the research core. Brand Radar AI starts from $199/month as an add-on; custom prompt packages start at $50/month for +2,500 checks.

Limitations: Lite is one user; extra users $40/month, max two. Five AI prompts will not run a shopping-assistant program. Ahrefs is not Merchant Center. It will not emit Offer.availability. Content Kit is another $99/month add-on.

Semrush for Stores

Best fit: teams that want one login for keywords, position tracking, site audit, and a growing AI-visibility toolkit. SEO plan is enough for a single brand with 500 keywords. Starter is the first honest "SEO + AI search" bundle at $199/$165.17. Ecommerce industry pages exist on Semrush's marketing site; the SKU is still the same cloud.

Limitations: 500 keywords is tight for a store with 8,000 SKUs if you track modifiers aggressively. Additional users start at $45/month. Semrush is not a feed optimizer. It will not reconcile Shopify inventory to JSON-LD.

Product Schema and the Third Job

Google's Product structured data intro (fetched 2026-09-04) tells stores to choose product snippets versus merchant listings, then add as many enhancement properties as they have (ratings, shipping, availability, returns). Suites help you find the URLs. They do not keep price in sync when Shopify changes a variant.

A 2,400-SKU Shopify store tracks 500 Semrush keywords at $117.33/month annual and crawls templates in Ahrefs Lite at $129/month — $246.33/month if you stubbornly run both. One collection template serves 180 URLs. When merchandising edits a variant, Shopify emits products/update. A proposed US Tech Automations workflow could receive that webhook, compare the variant price to the JSON-LD on the product URL, and open a ticket if they differ by more than $0.01, with a human approving any theme or metafield write. Three figures: 2,400 SKUs, 180 URLs on one template, $246.33 dual-suite waste. Prerequisites: Shopify admin webhook, theme or metafield access, and a rule that the agent never publishes without review.

Second paragraph: the same design can take an Ahrefs Site Audit export (or API on paid plans) of 4xx product URLs and match them to products/update events so discontinued SKUs noindex instead of ranking a 404. Make and n8n can do the webhook; you must own idempotency on variant ID, retries on 429, and retention of payloads that include SKUs. See agentic workflows for the step shape.

Site base earn rate: 12.2% according to US Tech Automations mix-config (2026), against 17.8% for COMPARISON pages in the same 12,514-page count.

Who This Is For

Ecommerce SEO leads and founders who will actually crawl templates and ship category copy. You have Shopify or similar, a feed, and a question: Ahrefs, Semrush, or both.

Red flags: Skip both suites if you have 20 products and no blog; Search Console is enough. Skip Enterprise $1,499 conversations if you have not exhausted Lite/SEO. Skip dual subscriptions if one person owns SEO.

When NOT to use US Tech Automations

If Ahrefs Site Audit plus a Monday spreadsheet already ships fixes, stop there. If Semrush reports go to a client PDF and nobody touches Shopify, orchestration will not create a merchandiser. If Zapier already maps products/update to a Slack alert with retries, keep it.

Questions Stores Ask

Is Ahrefs or Semrush better for ecommerce?

Ahrefs if crawl credits and backlink graphs are the daily job. Semrush if you want position tracking, content, and AI prompts in one bill. For a mid-size catalog, start with one entry plan ($129 or $117.33–$139), not both.

Can I run both?

Yes, and it is usually waste. $129 + $139 is $268/month before users. Split only when research and reporting are different teams with different must-have reports.

Does Semrush replace Google Merchant Center?

No. Merchant listings need product data Google can verify. Semrush will not host your feed.

How many keywords should a store track?

Semrush SEO includes 500; Ahrefs Lite 750. Track collections and money SKUs, not every variant modifier. Add-ons exist ($20/mo per 200 keywords on Moz; Semrush plan jumps are larger).

Where do AI prompts fit?

Semrush Starter 50 daily prompts; Ahrefs Lite 5, Brand Radar from $199/month. Prompts do not fix missing availability.

What about no-code instead of orchestration?

Shopify Flow, Make, and n8n can listen to products/update and alert Slack with run histories. You still design idempotency, access scopes, and a human approve step before theme edits.

Category Pages, Faceted Nav, and Crawl Waste

Ecommerce SEO fails in the template, not in the keyword tool. A collection that serves 180 URLs from one section, plus faceted nav that creates ?color= and ?size= clones, will burn Ahrefs crawl credits and Semrush Site Audit on garbage. Lite's 100,000 credits disappear if you include every parameter.

Canonicals are how you tell Google which clone is the collection. Canonical usage: 65% mobile, 69% desktop according to HTTP Archive (2024). If your theme is in the 35% without a canonical, buy neither suite until that is fixed — Search Console will show it for free.

Faceted nav rules to ship before you scale keyword tracking:

  • Index the collection URL. Noindex or canonical parameter combinations unless they are real landing pages with unique copy and inventory.

  • Paginated series should not create a second indexable copy of page 1.

  • Internal links from the homepage and from related collections should point at the canonical collection, not at a filtered view.

Google's Product structured data still splits snippets (non-purchase) from merchant listings (buyable pages). Category pages are usually not merchant listings. Product URLs are. Putting Offer markup on a collection that cannot add to cart is a mismatch.

Semrush Starter annual: $165.17/month according to Semrush (2026) if you also want 50 AI prompts. That is the first Semrush SKU that is honest about "SEO + AI search." Ahrefs Lite still only includes 5 AI prompts; Brand Radar from $199/month is the add-on. For a store, 50 shopping-assistant prompts can matter more than a second 250 keywords. Model it separately from crawl credits.

A 12-month TCO sketch using published floors: Ahrefs Lite $129 × 12 = $1,548, one extra user $40 × 12 = $480, total $2,028. Semrush SEO annual $117.33 × 12 = $1,407.96, one extra user from $45 × 12 = $540, total $1,947.96. The gap is not the story. The story is whether 100,000 crawl credits or 500 daily-tracked keywords is the constraint. Catalogs with heavy templates usually run out of crawl first, which is Ahrefs Standard at $249/month, not Lite.

Do not pay both $129 and $139 to two logins for one merchandiser. If reporting must live in Semrush PDFs and research must live in Site Explorer, name those two humans before you name two invoices.

Shopify Flow can hide OOS products. It cannot rewrite JSON-LD. That remaining seam is why orchestration exists, and why this page is a 3-way rather than a two-logo affiliate table.

A merchandiser's week should look like this if the suite is earning its invoice. Monday: Site Audit or Semrush crawl of collection templates only, not the whole 50,000-SKU parameter space. Tuesday: export 4xx and duplicate-title clusters, group by template, file at most five tickets. Wednesday: keyword work on two collection ideas that already have inventory depth, not on SKUs you will discontinue. Thursday: compare competitor category titles in Site Explorer or Semrush, and steal only the modifiers you can stock. Friday: check Merchant Center diagnostics, not the SEO suite, for feed errors.

If that week never happens, $129 or $117.33 is a dashboard subscription. Fire the login before you upgrade to Advanced or $549. Extra users at $40–$45/month make sense only when the second human actually logs in. Shared passwords are how brands lose audit trails and how Ahrefs bills extra seats anyway.

IndexNow and auto-submit appear on Ahrefs Project Boost Pro at $20/month per project. That is a separate meter. It does not replace a correct canonical. It does not create Product markup. Treat boosts as optional after templates are clean.

International stores: Ahrefs Keywords Explorer translations sit on Standard and up. Semrush multi-location/device tracking sits on Pro+. If you sell in three countries, the entry plans are the wrong SKUs. Model Advanced/Pro+ before you promise the EU catalog an audit.

Finally, AI prompts. Semrush Starter's 50 daily prompts are useful for "best running shoe for flat feet" class queries. Ahrefs Lite's 5 prompts are a taste. Neither writes the PDP. If ChatGPT is citing a 2019 blog, refresh that URL with current specs from the PIM. The suite only told you that you lost.

Glossary

  • Crawl credit: Budget for Site Audit URLs; Ahrefs Lite 100,000/month.

  • Merchant listing: Product rich result for pages where the user can buy.

  • Product snippet: Rich result for non-purchase product pages (reviews, editorials).

  • Template SEO: One theme section ranking many collection or product URLs.

  • PIM: Product information manager, the facts suites do not store.

  • JSON-LD: The usual format for Product schema.

  • Brand Radar: Ahrefs' AI-prompt product, add-on from $199/month.

  • Offer.availability: Schema field that must match the cart.

If the suite is chosen and the remaining work is keeping SKU facts, schema, and discontinued URLs honest without a silent miss, price that layer on pricing.
