7 Best Generative Engine Tools 2026 [Decision Guide]

Sep 7, 2026

A generative engine optimization (GEO) tool is software that records whether an answer engine — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, or a sibling — named, quoted, or linked your brand for a prompt you already care about. It is not a content grader, it is not a CMS, and it is not Google Search Console position. The seven tools in this decision guide are Profound, Rankability, Scrunch, Peec, AthenaHQ, Goodie, and Semrush. US Tech Automations sits above them as the ticket layer that blocks a rewrite when the citation check, the unique fact, and the named reviewer have not all passed.

TL;DR: Buy Profound, Scrunch, Peec, AthenaHQ, or Goodie if the system of record should be model citations. Buy Rankability if you still need a content-optimization workspace plus AI-answer tracking. Buy Semrush if AI visibility must live in a suite you already pay for. Sample the engine you claim to rank in. Do not report ChatGPT as Google.

GEO vs classic SEO

Classic SEO measures queries, position, clicks. GEO measures prompts, engines, and citations. You can be #1 in Google and uncited in Gemini. You can be cited in Perplexity and invisible in AI Overviews. The ledgers are separate.

Ayzeo's 2026 comparison is the independent map in this brief. GEO prices last checked: 2026-08-17 according to Ayzeo (2026). That write-up lists Profound, Peec, Scrunch, and Otterly among dedicated AI-visibility tools. Otterly is named there and is not one of the seven on this page; we do not invent its dollars either. Public list prices for the seven are contact vendor on this page except where a suite module sits next to a retrieved grader price we already had.

The engines disagree. A June 2026 consensus run found ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity agreed only 9% of the time on which tools to recommend, according to Lil Big Things (2026). If your GEO dashboard only samples one engine, you are measuring that engine.

Semrush's market sample is the large-n context. AI Visibility Index: 126 million prompts according to Semrush (2026), covering U.S. AI search prompts from January through April 2026. Use it as a map. Do not use it as your 40-prompt QA.

On our own corpus this page is a BEST_OF. BEST_OF earn rate: 15.2% according to US Tech Automations (2026), counted on 12,514 live pages on 2026-08-24. '7 Best' titles: 25.5% vs 14.0% according to US Tech Automations Phase 1 count (2026), on 247 versus 322 pages.

Profound vs Rankability vs Scrunch (then Peec, AthenaHQ, Goodie, Semrush)

Profound

Best fit: a dedicated AI-visibility workspace whose job is "did the engine cite us?" Profound is a GEO platform, not a Site Audit.

Limitations: contact vendor for dollars. Profound will not write the unique fact. Implementation: import the prompt list, sample the engines you sell into, ticket competitor citations. Linked primary evidence: Profound.

Rankability

Best fit: teams that still live in content optimization and want AI-answer tracking in the same content workflow. Rankability is a content platform that expanded into this job.

Limitations: contact vendor. A content score is not a citation. Implementation: keep the grader column separate from the citation column. Linked primary evidence: Rankability.

Scrunch

Best fit: brand-level AI visibility when Scrunch is the GEO product you want as the ledger. Scrunch is in Ayzeo's dedicated-tool list (prices checked 2026-08-17).

Limitations: contact vendor. Scrunch is not Semrush Site Audit. Implementation: same prompt list, same human gate. Linked primary evidence: Scrunch.

Peec

Best fit: dedicated AI-visibility tracking; also in Ayzeo's list. Peec is a GEO tracker.

Limitations: contact vendor. Not a CMS. Linked primary evidence: Peec.

AthenaHQ

Best fit: GEO workspace when AthenaHQ is the AI-search product the team already evaluated next to AirOps-class tools. Pepper Content's AirOps-alternatives guide (claims checked 2026-08-12) named AthenaHQ among like-for-like options — treat that as category context, not a GEO share ranking.

Limitations: contact vendor. Linked primary evidence: AthenaHQ.

Goodie

Best fit: another dedicated GEO platform when Goodie is the UI the team will actually open. Goodie is an AI-visibility product.

Limitations: contact vendor. Linked primary evidence: Goodie.

Semrush

Best fit: AI visibility as a module inside a suite that already does rank, audit, and keyword research. Semrush is also the publisher of the 126 million-prompt index.

Limitations: suite TCO is contact vendor here. A Position Tracking 200 is not a ChatGPT citation. Implementation: two columns, never averaged. Linked primary evidence: Semrush.

Who this is for

This page is for SEO leads, brand, and content ops who have to show citations in answer engines, not only blue links.

Red flags: Skip Profound if you will only log in to Semrush Position Tracking. Skip Semrush if you need a GEO-only ledger and will never open the suite. Skip the category if 15 prompts fit in a weekly paste into ChatGPT.

Weekly prompt-loop recipe

Worked example: 80 prompts (36 head queries plus paraphrases), 12 landing pages, Semrush search_volume on the 36 heads, a Profound (or Scrunch/Peec) citation export, and a 3-hour Wednesday review. Week one: 80 runs, 11 brand citations, 24 competitor citations, 45 none. The editor rewrites 8 URLs and still fails 6 because Gemini cites the competitor while ChatGPT cites us — the 9% agreement figure is the reason you do not average engines. A Make scenario can POST the 80 rows and retry 5xx. US Tech Automations stores 80 results and 6 open tickets keyed by prompt_id + engine + date, and will not close the week until a named reviewer accepts "competitor cited, leave live" or "rewrite again." Semrush remains the suite; Profound remains the GEO ledger.

If you stitch this in Zapier, Make, or n8n, you can keep run histories, retries, error branches, and audit evidence when configured. You must own observability, idempotency (one row per prompt_id + engine + date), escalation, access controls, retention, and maintenance. A proposed US Tech Automations design would use that key, require a human before a rewrite ships, and still need Profound, Scrunch, Peec, or Semrush as the parser. It would not query ChatGPT for you if you have not connected a GEO tool.

Paste-into-ChatGPT DIY is valid for 15 prompts. It is not 80 × 4 engines. n8n can hit APIs; you still own the parser and the key.

Sample each engine on purpose

Build the weekly file with an engine column, not a blended "AI score."

  • Google AI Overviews: the query is often the same as your classic keyword. Measure Overview present / absent and cited URL. Semrush overlap in a February 2026 SaaS sample was 8.3% versus Google's top 10 — do not expect your Overview citations to match your blue links.

  • Gemini: paraphrase the query; Gemini is not the Overview parser.

  • ChatGPT: branded and unbranded prompts. A "best X tools" prompt is a different job than a navigational brand prompt.

  • Perplexity: citations are often explicit links. Easier to parse; still not Google.

Profound, Scrunch, Peec, AthenaHQ, and Goodie should let you filter by engine. If the UI you demo cannot filter, you will average engines and ship a meaningless 40%. Rankability should still expose engine tags if GEO is why you are buying it. Semrush's AI visibility module has to be a separate column from Position Tracking.

Rewrite rules: if Gemini cites a competitor and ChatGPT cites you, do not rewrite for the average. Pick the engine that matches the money query. A B2B buyer who lives in ChatGPT is not an Overview-only problem. Write that down or the editor will chase every red cell.

Second scenario: 20 branded prompts, Semrush only, no Profound. You learn suite-shaped AI visibility and you miss Gemini-specific misses. That is acceptable if the CTA is "stay in Semrush." It is not acceptable if the VP asked "are we in Gemini?" Buy a dedicated ledger (Profound, Scrunch, Peec, AthenaHQ, Goodie) for that question, or paste 20 prompts by hand and stop pretending the suite answered it.

Otterly appears in Ayzeo's 2026-08-17 list and is not one of our seven. If a vendor demo pivots to Otterly, compare it as measurement-first (Pepper also grouped Otterly that way next to Semrush AI Toolkit). Do not swap it into this table without a new brief.

Rewrite playbook when a competitor is cited

Do not open the grader first. Open the citation.

  1. Engine + prompt + cited competitor URL (from Profound, Scrunch, Peec, AthenaHQ, Goodie, or Semrush).

  2. Unique fact on your URL that the competitor page lacks. If you cannot name one, the miss is deserved.

  3. If the fact exists but is buried, move it up. If it does not exist, write it. If the engine wants a table, ship a table.

  4. Re-sample that engine in 7 days. Do not average with ChatGPT if the miss was Gemini.

  5. If you still lose, log "competitor cited, leave live" with a reviewer name. Endless rewrites for a 15-prompt vanity list is not GEO.

Rankability users: keep the content brief after step 2, not before. A brief that only adds terms will not create the fact. Semrush users: do not let Position Tracking #3 close the ticket. Classic #3 plus zero citations is a GEO fail.

Branded prompts ("what is {your product}") should almost always cite you. If they do not, you have a knowledge problem (docs, Wikipedia-class sources, structured facts), not a keyword density problem. Unbranded "best X" prompts are a different fight; 9% model agreement (Lil Big Things, June 2026) means winning ChatGPT does not win Gemini.

Cap weekly rewrites. The 8 rewrites / 6 remaining fails in the 80-prompt example is a sane cap. A team that rewrites 80 pages every Wednesday is not doing GEO; it is churning HTML.

Glossary

  • Prompt: the question you sample, not the Google keyword (though they often overlap).

  • Engine tag: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, AI Mode — never implied.

  • Citation: your URL or brand used in the answer. A mention without a URL still counts as a brand citation if that is your rule, written down.

  • Overlap: how often an AI answer's cited pages sit in Google's top 10. Thin overlap is normal; Semrush's SaaS sample is the reason we do not expect 80%.

  • GEO ledger: the system of record for citations. Distinct from position.

  • Idempotency key: prompt_id + engine + date. Without it, retries duplicate tickets.

Key Takeaways

  • GEO is prompt + engine + citation, not a classic rank.

  • Profound, Scrunch, Peec, AthenaHQ, and Goodie win as dedicated ledgers.

  • Rankability wins when content optimization and GEO share a workspace.

  • Semrush wins as a suite module and as the 126 million-prompt index publisher.

  • Ayzeo last checked dedicated-tool prices on 2026-08-17; this page still prints contact vendor.

  • Sample each engine. 9% agreement is why averages lie.

When NOT to use US Tech Automations

Skip the ticket layer if Profound already exports misses and one SEO already rewrites from that list. Skip it if Semrush AI Toolkit is the only module you will open and the prompt list is 15 rows. Skip it if you have no unique facts for the engines to cite. Those are the cases where the simpler existing tool wins.

Company: homepage. Priced next step: pricing.

FAQs

What is a generative engine optimization tool?

It is software that samples answer engines for your prompts and records citations. It is not Search Console and it is not a CMS.

Is Profound or Rankability the better default?

Profound is the better default if the ledger should be citations only. Rankability is the better default if the team still lives in content optimization and wants GEO in that same workflow. Neither publishes a dollar on this page.

Why is Semrush in a GEO shortlist?

Because many teams will only run AI visibility inside a suite they already pay for, and because Semrush published the 126 million-prompt 2026 AI Visibility Index. A suite module is still a module, not a dedicated GEO workspace.

How should we read Ayzeo's list?

Read it as a 2026-08-17 snapshot that named Profound, Peec, Scrunch, and Otterly among dedicated AI-visibility tools. Otterly is not one of our seven. We do not invent prices Ayzeo checked.

Can we average ChatGPT and Gemini into one "AI rank"?

No. Lil Big Things reported 9% agreement across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity on tool recommendations (June 2026). Keep engine tags.

Will Zapier replace Scrunch?

Zapier, Make, or n8n can schedule jobs, retry 5xx, and store audit rows when configured. They will not parse answer-engine citations unless you add Profound, Scrunch, Peec, Semrush, or a parser you built. Use them as pipes. Key on prompt_id + engine + date.

What is the first number on the weekly GEO slide?

Prompt count, runs completed, brand citations, competitor citations, none — split by engine. Do not lead with a content score. Do not lead with a classic #3.
