6 Best Sales Tax Software for Ecommerce Stores in 2027

Oct 25, 2026

Sales tax software for ecommerce is a tool that works out which state and local rates apply to each order and, in its higher tiers, also registers your business, files returns, and remits the tax. The category decision comes before the vendor decision. A store that sells into two states from its own website needs a different tool than a store that sells into a dozen states and also sells on Amazon. This guide compares six vendor groups: TaxCloud, TaxJar with Stripe Tax, Zamp, Avalara, Numeral, and Kintsugi.

Online sales keep taking a larger share of commerce, so more stores face multistate filing duties. Q2 2026 e-commerce share: 17.1% of total sales according to U.S. Census Bureau (2026), seasonally adjusted.

US Tech Automations is not a sales tax calculator in the way these vendors are. Its public pricing page describes no-code workflow automation and names no sales tax calculation, filing, or nexus feature. We treat it as a layer that can sit above a tax tool and run the process around it, and we explain where that helps and where it does not later in this guide.

TL;DR: If you sell on one platform and file in a few states, start with a calculator that bundles filing, such as TaxJar or TaxCloud, or with Stripe Tax if your checkout already runs on Stripe. If you file in many states every month, model per-filing pricing before you choose, because per-filing vendors charge for each return. Use a workflow layer only when the problem is the process around the tax tool, not the tax tool itself.

Key Takeaways

  • Choose the category first: calculation only, calculation with filing, or managed compliance.

  • Per-filing and per-action pricing scales with the number of returns you file. Numeral lists $75 per filing, and Kintsugi's Starter plan charges $75 per action.

  • Subscriptions are easier to predict, but their bundled credits or return tiers set the real limit. TaxJar Starter lists $39 per month and TaxCloud filing starts at $39 per month.

  • Several vendors publish no price, and third-party figures conflict. Use the vendor's own page and get a written quote where none is listed.

  • A workflow platform can run the steps around a tax tool, but it does not replace the calculation or filing engine. US Tech Automations' public pricing describes no sales tax functions.

The category decision comes first

Three categories cover most of this market, and each prices differently.

Calculation only means the tool computes the rate on each order and leaves registration and filing to you. Stripe Tax Basic fits here. It covers calculation and collection with no recurring fee and bills per transaction in states where you are registered.

Calculation with filing means the vendor files returns for you, usually on a subscription with a cap on returns or credits. TaxJar's AutoFile, TaxCloud's filing subscription, and Numeral's per-filing model sit in this group, though Numeral bills each filing separately rather than through a bundle.

Managed compliance means the vendor handles registration, nexus monitoring, filings, and exemptions, usually on a custom quote. Avalara and Zamp fit here, as do Kintsugi's Scale and Premium plans and Stripe Tax Complete.

Your filing count matters more than your revenue. A store that files in four states once a year and a store that files monthly in twelve states may have similar revenue, but their costs diverge sharply under per-filing pricing.

How we evaluated the vendors

Pricing checked October 20, 2026. We used each vendor's own pricing page wherever it was readable, third-party pages only where the vendor page was silent, and government sources for market context. Most vendor pages show a 2026 copyright footer but no effective date, so each figure below is dated by the day we checked it. Where a figure came only from a third party, we say so. The weights in the table below are our judgment for this category. They are analysis, not vendor data.

Feature matrix

The matrix separates what a vendor's pricing page states from what it omits. "Not stated" means the page we checked did not say, not that the feature is absent. Confirm those cells in a demo before you buy.

Note that the TaxJar Starter and Professional plans are legacy products now presented alongside Stripe Tax, so confirm which product a quote covers before you sign.

A hypothetical scenario makes the difference concrete. Assume a store files one return in each of 12 states every month, which is 144 returns a year. The arithmetic below uses each vendor's listed rates and states its assumptions, so you can rerun it with your own count.

OptionAssumptionAnnual result
Numeral, per-filing list rate144 filings at $75 each$10,800, plus $150 per new registration
Kintsugi Starter, per action144 filing actions at $75 each$10,800, no transaction fees per Kintsugi's page
TaxJar Starter AutoFile2 bundled credits; 142 extra credits at $50; 12 months at $39; assumes one credit per return$7,568
TaxJar Professional AutoFile4 bundled credits; 140 extra credits at $55; 12 months at $99; assumes one credit per return$8,888
TaxCloud filing12 returns a month falls under the 15-return monthly tier; that tier's price is not on the page we checkedFrom $39/mo for the entry tier; total not calculable
Stripe Tax CompleteEntry tier allows 4 filings a year, so 144 filings need a higher tier or a quoteFrom $90/mo for the entry tier; total not calculable

The TaxJar rows assume each state return consumes one AutoFile credit, which the vendor page does not confirm for monthly filings. Treat them as a sensitivity check, not a quote.

Vendor profiles

TaxCloud

TaxCloud combines calculation with a filing subscription that scales by order volume and return count. Its pricing page lists filing from $39 per month and audit support from $99 per month, and it offers a 30-day trial with no card. The trial does not include filing or registration.

Best fit: single-store sellers with a predictable number of returns who want a monthly bill and can test calculation on live orders during the trial. Limitations: the trial cannot test the full filing path, the per-tier prices are not shown in our capture, and third-party summaries disagree on whether calculation is free in Streamlined states, so ask for that in writing. Implementation: connect the store during the trial, compare calculated tax with checkout tax on a sample of orders, and only then turn on filing. Evidence: TaxCloud pricing.

TaxJar and Stripe Tax

Webgility's page reports that Stripe acquired TaxJar in 2021, and TaxJar's legacy plans remain listed on its site. TaxJar Starter is $39 per month and Professional is $99 per month, with bundled AutoFile credits and extra credits at $50 to $55 each. Stripe Tax Basic: 0.5% per transaction according to Stripe (2026) for no-code billing, checkout, invoicing and payment links.

Stripe Tax Basic covers calculation and collection, while Complete adds registrations and automated filing on a monthly plan starting at $90 with a one-year contract. Best fit: stores whose checkout or billing already runs through Stripe and that need calculation without a subscription. TaxJar Starter suits sellers who want a flat monthly bundle and can live with credit caps. Limitations: Basic does not register or file for you, Complete's entry tier allows 4 filings a year, and API use is billed per transaction with calculation calls above the included 10 charged separately. Implementation: the no-code route covers Stripe billing products, while a custom storefront needs the API route and an integration build. Red flag: buying Basic and assuming filings are included. Evidence: TaxJar pricing and Stripe Tax pricing.

Zamp

Zamp publishes no dollar prices. Its pricing page lists a Free tier with a one-time nexus analysis, a 30-minute consultation with a senior sales tax professional, and a 30-day API sandbox. Its U.S. and U.S.-plus-Canada plans sit behind "Contact sales." Zamp's blog says its pricing is scoped to footprint rather than per filing or per transaction, which is the vendor's own claim and not one we could test.

Webgility reports a Startup tier at $999 per month covering 21 states, but Zamp's own pages do not show that figure, so we treat it as unverified. Best fit: sellers who want managed compliance and a scoped quote, and who want a nexus analysis before they commit. Limitations: you cannot budget from a published price until a quote arrives, so ask for the quote in writing with the included registrations and filings listed. Implementation: start with the free analysis and sandbox, then request a quote for the states you actually need. Red flag: a team that needs published prices before any sales conversation. Evidence: Zamp's sales tax guide and Zamp pricing.

Avalara

Avalara is quote-based and sits at the enterprise end of this list. Avalara's own sales and use tax page describes AvaTax, returns and exemption certificate tools but gives no price for AvaTax, so the dollar figure here comes from a competitor-authored page. Avalara registration: $403 per location according to Zamp (2026), which also lists filing and exemption certificate management as separate add-ons. We could not confirm those figures on Avalara's own site.

Best fit: multichannel sellers that need broader compliance coverage, or businesses whose finance team already works with Avalara. Limitations: the total depends on add-ons that each carry their own fee, and a single-state store is usually paying for capacity it does not use. Implementation: request a quote that lists registrations, returns, and exemption tools separately. Red flag: comparing a base quote with another vendor's all-in price. Evidence: Avalara sales and use tax.

Numeral

Numeral lists a free Monitoring plan, Professional at $75 per filing and $150 per registration, and Enterprise on a custom quote. Monitoring connects your stores or billing platforms for a free nexus study and alerts you when you cross nexus in a new jurisdiction. Numeral Professional: $75 per filing according to Numeral (2026), plus $150 per registration.

Best fit: sellers who want free nexus monitoring first and expect a small number of filings, so per-filing charges stay small. Limitations: charges grow with every filing and registration, so a store across many states pays per return, and the free plan monitors but does not file. Implementation: connect stores or billing platforms for the free nexus study before you pay for anything. Red flag: budgeting from a third-party "per month" figure, which conflicts with the vendor's per-filing page. Evidence: Numeral pricing.

Kintsugi

Kintsugi's free plan has no card requirement and includes exposure monitoring across the U.S. and 100+ countries, threshold alerts, historical liability auditing, and no-code connections to Shopify and Stripe. Its Starter plan charges $75 per action, including each registration, filing, back filing, amended return, and deregistration, with no transaction fees. Kintsugi Starter: $75 per action according to Kintsugi (2026), and Scale and Premium are flat monthly plans by quote. Premium adds real-time tax calculation and API access.

Best fit: stores unsure of their nexus exposure that want monitoring and Shopify or Stripe connections before paying, and that file few returns. Limitations: $75 per action adds up quickly at the 144-filing scale above, real-time calculation sits on the quote-only Premium plan, and a third-party listing describes the price as usage-based "per month," which conflicts with the vendor's per-action page. Implementation: start on the free plan, review exposure, and move to Starter only when registrations or filings are needed. Red flag: expecting free monitoring to include filings. Evidence: Kintsugi pricing.

Where US Tech Automations fits

US Tech Automations is positioned above the tax tools in this guide. Its public pricing page lists three self-serve plans and a managed option: Solo at $117 per month with 3 active workflows and one scheduled run per day per workflow, Growth at $447 per month with 5 active workflows and up to 120 scheduled runs a month, and Scale at $1,647 per month with 10 active workflows, up to 1,440 scheduled runs a month, and custom code steps. The Performance tier is priced after a discovery call. The page names Gmail as its only integration and mentions no Shopify, accounting, sales tax calculation, filing, or nexus feature.

The alternative most readers are actually weighing is a stitched workflow in Zapier, Make, or n8n, or an in-house script. Those tools can keep run histories, retries, and error branches when they are configured, so they are a serious option. What the buyer must deliberately design and own is the rest: idempotency, so a repeated order event does not create a second filing action; escalation paths for exceptions; access controls on tax credentials; retention of tax records for the period each state requires; and maintenance when the Shopify or tax-vendor APIs change.

A US Tech Automations design for this job would not calculate tax. It would receive order events, pass each order to the tax tool you chose, store a run record for each order, and hold any order whose tax result differs from checkout in an approval queue for a named person. Building it would need a Shopify webhook subscription, API credentials for the tax tool, a mapped set of order fields, and a human approver before any filing action runs. The Scale plan's custom code steps are the likely place for a connector, but the pricing page lists no Shopify or tax-vendor integration, so that connector is a build item to confirm before any commitment.

Worked example: a 12-state filer

Take a hypothetical Shopify store that sells into 12 states and files a return in each every month, which is 144 returns a year. The design above would subscribe to Shopify's orders/paid webhook topic, pass each paid order to the chosen tax tool, and write one run record per order. Orders where the tax tool's result differs from the checkout amount beyond a tolerance you set would go to an approval queue, and nothing would file until a named person approves it. At Numeral's listed Professional rate of $75 per filing, the 144 filings alone would cost $10,800 a year before $150 per new registration, so the approval step should cover exceptions rather than every filing, or the review load grows with the store.

When NOT to use US Tech Automations

Skip it if your tax tool already handles calculation, filing, and remittance from checkout and the only remaining task is a monthly export that the tool's own reports cover, because a built-in report is simpler and cheaper. Skip it if you need a licensed calculation engine with exemption certificate management and registration services under one contract, which the managed vendors above sell and which its public pricing does not describe. Skip it if you need one alert or one CSV each month, since a single-purpose integration is simpler to run than a workflow platform with its own plan limits.

Who this is for

This guide fits ecommerce operators selling on Shopify or a similar platform into more than one state, with a current process built on spreadsheets or a plugin and an owner who reviews exceptions. The pain points are rate errors at checkout, missed registration or filing deadlines, and hours spent reconciling exports. These are qualitative fit criteria, not size thresholds.

Red flags: you sell into one state where your platform already calculates and you file one return; you need a licensed tax engine rather than a process layer; or you need a published price before any vendor conversation, which rules out the quote-only vendors.

Glossary

  • Nexus: a connection to a state that obligates you to collect and remit sales tax there.

  • Economic nexus: an obligation based on sales or transaction thresholds rather than physical presence, which the U.S. Supreme Court allowed in South Dakota v. Wayfair (2018).

  • Registration: the permit that lets you collect sales tax in a state.

  • Filing: submitting a periodic sales tax return, which some states require even when the amount is zero.

  • Remittance: paying collected tax to the state.

  • Marketplace facilitator: a platform, such as Amazon, that collects and remits tax on sales it processes in states with facilitator laws.

  • AutoFile: TaxJar's filing feature, billed through a bundle of credits.

  • Streamlined Sales Tax (SST): a multistate agreement that standardizes registration and rules among member states.

Decision checklist

  1. List every state where you have sales and note which ones you believe create nexus.

  2. Pick a category: calculation only, calculation with filing, or managed compliance.

  3. Count your filings per year at your real frequency and price a per-filing model and a subscription at that count.

  4. Confirm each number on the vendor's own page, and get a written quote for every vendor that lists none.

  5. Test on live orders during a trial or sandbox and compare the results with checkout tax.

  6. Confirm data export and cancellation terms before you sign.

  7. Name the person who approves exceptions and filing actions before you turn anything on.

Where the sources disagree

Several third-party figures conflict with vendor pages, and we did not use the conflicting ones. Webgility's page lists TaxCloud Starter at $199 per year, according to Webgility (2026), but TaxCloud's current page does not show an annual figure in the version we captured. The Retail Exec lists Numeral from $75 per month, according to The Retail Exec (2026), which conflicts with Numeral's per-filing page. Wisconsin's Department of Revenue reports 23 full member states and one associate member, according to Wisconsin Department of Revenue (2026), so the "24 SST member states" figure some summaries use counts the associate member.

Frequently asked questions

What does sales tax software cost for a Shopify store?

There is no single price. The verified figures run from TaxJar Starter at $39 per month to Kintsugi Starter at $75 per action, and managed services sit above those on custom quotes. Confirm the Shopify connector in each vendor's listing before you budget, because the connection method and the plan that includes it vary.

What are the best TaxJar alternatives for small ecommerce sellers?

The closest alternatives in this guide are TaxCloud, Numeral, and Kintsugi, each billed differently: a monthly filing subscription with tiers, per-filing pricing with free monitoring, and per-action pricing with a free plan. Stripe Tax Basic is the alternative if your checkout already runs on Stripe. Choose by filing count first, because the cheapest model at 12 returns a year can be the most expensive at 144.

Is there free sales tax software for a small online store?

Free options exist, but they cover monitoring and analysis, not filing. Numeral's Monitoring plan, Kintsugi's free plan, and Zamp's free tier provide nexus monitoring or analysis, while TaxCloud offers a 30-day trial that excludes filing and registration. Expect to pay per filing or per action once you need returns submitted.

Do Amazon FBA sellers need separate sales tax filing software?

Usually yes, for the sales Amazon does not cover. Under marketplace facilitator laws, Amazon collects and remits tax on marketplace sales in the states that have them, but orders from your own site or other channels remain yours to collect and file. We could not retrieve Amazon's current help page for this review, so confirm the coverage in Seller Central before you rely on it.

Do I still have to file a return if a marketplace collects the tax?

Sometimes. Some states still expect sellers with nexus to register or file informational or zero returns even when a marketplace collects and remits the tax. Check each state before you assume the marketplace covers the filing duty.

Does a workflow platform replace sales tax software?

No. A workflow platform can route orders, hold exceptions for approval, and log runs, but it does not compute a rate or file a return on its own. You still need a tool that holds the tax logic, and a workflow layer adds value only when the process around that tool is the bottleneck.

Next step

If the work you need automated is the process around your tax tool, such as order routing, exception review, and month-end handoffs, read how the plans are described on our workflow automation site and settle the connector question before you commit. Start with the category decision above, because the tax tool you pick sets the rest of the cost.
