ChatGPT Business Premium [What It Changes]
TL;DR
ChatGPT Business Premium is OpenAI's higher-capacity seat inside ChatGPT Business: $125 per user per month ($100 billed yearly), 5× Standard usage, and no five-hour usage limit, as of the August 10, 2026 announcement.
Standard seats stay $25 monthly / $20 yearly; you mix both types in one workspace, and ChatGPT Business still requires 2 seats.
The early waitlist for $100 in credits per Premium seat (up to $500) closed after August 20; the Help Center now says that waitlist is closed.
For a 2-truck shop, a 10-person agency, or a solo clinic, Premium is a seat for the people who write long reports or run all-day research — not a plan you buy for every login.
Key Takeaways
Buy Premium only for roles that hit the five-hour cap; leave Standard on everyone else and keep one bill.
Annual billing makes Premium 5× Standard's price ($100 vs $20) for the stated 5× usage — the multiple matches on both monthly and yearly lists.
Self-serve Business is not ChatGPT Enterprise: no API included, and invoice, ACH, zero data retention, and a BAA need a contracted offering.
Extra usage after the seat cap is workspace credits, which expire one year after issuance unless a promo says otherwise.
Pair the seat mix with work you already run — intake, dispatch, follow-up — instead of standing up a second AI stack.
What ChatGPT Business Premium is
ChatGPT Business Premium is OpenAI's $125-per-user monthly seat ($100 if you pay yearly) inside a ChatGPT Business workspace that gives one worker 5 times the usage of a Standard seat and turns off the five-hour usage limit so long research, full reports, and large Codex jobs are not cut off mid-shift.
A 2-truck HVAC shop should care because the owner who dumps a week's invoices, parts lists, and callback notes into one long chat is the person Standard was built to throttle, while the dispatcher who writes short estimates can stay on Standard. A 10-person marketing agency should care because the two people who turn customer insights into a whole campaign are the ones who hit the five-hour wall, not the account coordinator logging form fills. A solo-run clinic should care because a policy rewrite or a long chart-summary session is exactly the job that burns a five-hour window, and Premium is a capacity choice for that chair — not a new electronic health record.
This is a seat inside an existing Business workspace, not a new product family. OpenAI's Business page still frames ChatGPT as a platform for finance, sales, marketing, operations, and engineering. ChatGPT Business is the self-serve workspace with shared company context, plugins, flexible seats, and admin controls. Premium is the higher-capacity chair in that room.
What shipped on August 10, 2026
According to OpenAI, Premium seats cost $125 per user per month, or $100 per user per month when billed annually, and Standard remains $25 monthly or $20 yearly. Premium seats list at $125 per user monthly. PYMNTS reported the same split the next day and quoted OpenAI's line that Premium is for "your most active teammates." CryptoBriefing covered the same August 10, 2026 prices as a two-track Business plan.
OpenAI's own post says Premium includes 5× more usage than Standard, no five-hour usage limit, and predictable weekly usage resets, and that owners can mix seat types, upgrade or reassign seats, monitor usage, and manage billing in one workspace. Premium removes the 5-hour usage limit. If a Premium user still hits a cap, the company says the workspace can add shared credits managed by the owner.
ChatGPT Business overview confirms Standard and Premium both include ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex; Premium is the same access with higher usage limits. That page also states ChatGPT Team was renamed to ChatGPT Business on August 29, 2025, and that a Business workspace still requires 2 Standard or Premium seats (one of each still counts as two).

Workspaces created before June 24, 2026 could hold a legacy Codex-only seat; new workspaces do not get that SKU. Owners assign Standard or Premium per person and can swap those two types; legacy Codex seats are handled separately.
How the mechanism works in plain language
Think of Standard as a metered hose that shuts off after five hours of heavy use. Premium is a wider hose on the same pipe: five times the water, no five-hour shutoff, and a weekly reset instead of a mid-day stop. The workspace, SSO, and "we do not train on your business data by default" promise stay the same. You are not buying a second ChatGPT. You are buying more uninterrupted minutes for named people.
ChatGPT Business states that Premium includes 5× more usage with no five-hour limit, that admins track usage and spend, and that optional credits help power users avoid limits. ChatGPT Work is the agent that turns notes and files into finished docs, decks, and Sites, with more than 1,400 plugins. Codex is the coding agent in the same ChatGPT account. A Premium seat raises the usage pool those tools draw from; it does not add a new editor.
Member, seat, and role docs list four built-in roles: Owner, Admin, Analytics Viewer, and Member. Seat type is not the same as role. An Owner can sit on Standard; a Member can sit on Premium. Only owners switch paid seat types. Members on Standard can request Premium; the Standard seat stays live until an owner assigns an unused Premium seat or buys one. Sending an invite does not purchase a seat — availability is checked when the invite is accepted.
That is the operational change for a small firm: you stop treating ChatGPT as "everyone on Plus" and start treating it like a two-SKU labor tool. The people who already do long executive-assistant style drafting get Premium. Everyone else stays Standard.
Seat prices you can check
| Seat | Monthly list ($) | Annual per month ($) | Usage vs Standard | Five-hour cap (hours) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 25 | 20 | 1× | 5 |
| Premium | 125 | 100 | 5× | 0 |
Sources: OpenAI Premium announcement; ChatGPT Business overview.
Consumer ChatGPT pricing still lists Free at $0, Go at $8, Plus at $20, and Pro from $100 per month, with Pro advertising 5× or 20× more usage than Plus. Premium is not Plus and is not Pro. It is a Business-workspace seat with admin controls. ChatGPT Enterprise remains the sales-led tier OpenAI markets with "over 5 million business users across industries" and extras such as SCIM, custom RBAC, and data residency that Business does not list as self-serve.
USTA analysis: what a 10-person mix actually costs
USTA analysis. Inputs only: OpenAI's annual Business prices of $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, and the 2-seat minimum on ChatGPT Business overview. No other rates.
A 10-person team billed annually:
All Standard: 10 × $20 = $200 per month, $2,400 per year.
2 Premium + 8 Standard: (2 × $100) + (8 × $20) = $200 + $160 = $360 per month, $4,320 per year.
5 Premium + 5 Standard: (5 × $100) + (5 × $20) = $500 + $100 = $600 per month, $7,200 per year.
All Premium: 10 × $100 = $1,000 per month, $12,000 per year.
The delta from all-Standard to two Premium seats is $160 per month, or $1,920 per year, for two heavy users. Annual Premium is exactly 5× annual Standard ($100 / $20). Monthly lists are also 5× ($125 / $25). You are not paying a hidden multiplier on the published usage claim; the list multiple and the usage multiple match.
The U.S. Small Business Administration tells owners to run a cost-benefit check before a hire or a tool buy (their published outdoor-seating example nets $2,000 after $5,000 in extra profit and $3,000 in new costs). Apply that method here: $1,920 a year is the new cost of two Premium chairs. If those two people were getting cut off mid-project on Standard, the question is whether the unfinished work in a year is worth more than $1,920 — not whether the whole company "needs AI."
| Mix (10 people, annual billing) | Premium seats | Standard seats | Monthly ($) | Annual ($) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All Standard | 0 | 10 | 200 | 2400 |
| 2 Premium / 8 Standard | 2 | 8 | 360 | 4320 |
| 5 Premium / 5 Standard | 5 | 5 | 600 | 7200 |
| All Premium | 10 | 0 | 1000 | 12000 |
USTA analysis from OpenAI annual list prices on the Premium announcement. Caption is derivation, not a vendor quote.
Two individual ChatGPT Pro seats at $100 plus eight Plus seats at $20 also land at $360 a month. That cash match is real. What you do not get on personal plans is the Business workspace: SSO, MFA, centralized billing, owner-controlled seat swaps, and the no-training-by-default rule for Business data. If the failure mode is "the intern pasted a customer list into a personal Plus chat," the $160 delta is a control spend, not a model spend.
Who actually needs the Premium chair
OpenAI's announcement names the jobs: business owners turning sales reports, feedback, and inventory into an operating plan; marketers building whole campaigns; developers using Codex across larger codebases. That maps to small firms without translation.
On an HVAC desk, Premium is the owner or service manager who pastes a week's invoices and wants a parts-and-labor plan, not the tech who asks three short questions between jobs. On an agency desk, Premium is the strategist building the campaign, which is why marketing-agency workflow tools and Plutio alternatives still matter for intake and billing — ChatGPT does not replace the job tracker. On a clinic desk, Premium is the person rewriting policies or summarizing a long packet, not the front desk sending appointment reminders.
ChatGPT Business publishes customer examples: Plex Coffee cut certain internal staff messages by 50%; HYGH cites 5.5 hours saved per employee each week; Minnesota's translation office cites $100,000+ a month. Those are OpenAI's figures, not ours. The coffee example is the closest SMB shape: fewer repeat internal messages, not a 150-seat rollout.
The Census Bureau's Statistics of U.S. Businesses still publishes firm, establishment, employment, and payroll counts by enterprise size (latest tables labeled 2022 on that program page). Most U.S. employers are small on that series. A product that lets you put expensive seats on two people and cheap seats on eight is built for that size distribution.
If you already route web forms into a CRM, keep that rail. Form-to-CRM automation is still the intake job. Premium is for the human who then writes the long reply, the proposal, or the weekly operating plan from that pile.
Waitlist, credits, and the honest limits
According to the OpenAI Help Center waitlist article, the first 10,000 eligible waitlist workspaces receive credits. Waitlist credits topped out at $500 per workspace. The same article says the waitlist is now closed, that owners who joined before August 20 can still qualify if they add Premium seats within 30 days after launch, and that new workspaces had to stay under 200 members to qualify. Credits are $100 (2,500 credit units) per qualifying Premium seat, including upgrades from Standard, with a workspace cap of five seats.
OpenAI's announcement used the same $100 / 2,500 credits / $500 / five-seat math and pointed owners to the waitlist form. Service credit terms say promo credits are not cash, are not transferable, and expire one year after issuance unless a specific offer says otherwise. If you used promo credits, the related Premium-seat purchase is not refundable.
Limits that still bind after you buy Premium:
ChatGPT Business is self-serve. The overview says invoice billing, purchase orders, bank transfer, wire, ACH, net terms, split payments, zero data retention, and BAAs require a contracted offering, not self-serve Business.
API usage is separate and billed on the API. A Business subscription does not include API calls.
Extra usage beyond the seat is credits. Credits are not unlimited Premium.
Business data pages list encryption (AES-256 at rest, TLS 1.2+ in transit), SSO, MFA, and roles for Business. SCIM, custom RBAC, Intune, and data residency are listed for Enterprise / Edu / Healthcare / API, not as Business self-serve defaults.
Enterprise privacy says Business admins can view, export, and delete member conversations. Do not put a secret in Business that you would not let an owner export.
A BAA for HIPAA is described for ChatGPT for Healthcare and API healthcare customers, not for self-serve Business. A clinic should not park protected health information in a Premium seat and assume a BAA appeared.
OpenAI's Trust Portal lists SOC 2 Type 2, ISO/IEC 27001/27017/27018/27701, CSA STAR, GDPR, and CCPA documentation. The 2026 SOC 2 Type 2 report on that portal covers July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026. That is the compliance packet a buyer can request. It is not a license to skip your own review.
What other vendors charge for a heavy seat
| Product | Monthly list ($) | Annual monthly equivalent ($) |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Business Standard | 25 | 20 |
| ChatGPT Business Premium | 125 | 100 |
| ChatGPT Plus (individual) | 20 | 20 |
| ChatGPT Pro (individual) | 100 | 100 |
| Claude Pro | 20 | 17 |
| Claude Max (from) | 100 | 100 |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot Business add-on (promo) | 21 | 18 |
Sources: OpenAI Premium announcement; ChatGPT pricing; Claude pricing; Microsoft 365 Copilot pricing.
According to Anthropic's pricing page, Claude Max starts from $100 per month and offers 5× or 20× more usage than Pro per five-hour session. That page also states Team Standard seats give more than Pro and Team Premium seats give 5× more than Standard, and that Claude Enterprise is $20 per seat per month plus API-rate usage, billed annually. The 5× Premium pattern is not unique to OpenAI.
According to Microsoft, Microsoft 365 Copilot Business originally starting from $21.00 is now starting from $18.00 user/month paid yearly (promo window July 1, 2026–December 31, 2026, first year only). Bundles on that page list Microsoft 365 Business Premium with Copilot at $32.00 user/month yearly and Business Standard with Copilot at $23.50. Microsoft 365 Copilot is sold as AI inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, with prompts and responses not used to train models.
If your heavy work already lives in Microsoft 365, Copilot's add-on is the in-app seat. If your heavy work is long ChatGPT threads, Codex, and ChatGPT Work, Premium is the in-ChatGPT seat. They are not substitutes on a spreadsheet without looking at where the files actually sit.
Governance the seat does not replace
The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is voluntary guidance released January 26, 2023. NIST's generative-AI profile, NIST AI 600-1, is a July 2024 companion that names risks unique to or worsened by generative systems, including human misuse and weak measurement. Buying Premium does not complete that work. It raises how much a named person can generate inside the same risk surface.
According to the OECD AI Principles, there are 47 adherents to the first intergovernmental AI standard, updated in May 2024. The values listed there — transparency, robustness, accountability — are the same questions a 10-person shop should ask before a Premium user connects plugins to the books.
The EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) sets four risk levels and nine prohibited practices, with GPAI rules in force from August 2025 and the Act applicable from 2 August 2026. Transparency rules for chatbots — people should know they are talking to a machine — matter if an agency uses Premium to draft customer-facing copy. High-risk uses include employment tools and credit scoring; a small firm using ChatGPT to rank resumes is in a different legal bucket than a firm using it to draft a newsletter.
The California Attorney General's CCPA page, updated August 28, 2026, says the law covers for-profit businesses that do business in California and hit any of: over $25 million gross annual revenue, buy/sell/share personal information of 100,000 or more residents or households, or derive 50% or more of annual revenue from selling residents' personal information. OpenAI says Business supports CCPA. Your own threshold is still your problem if you put customer files in the workspace.
None of that is a reason to skip Premium if the five-hour cap is the actual bottleneck. It is a reason not to confuse a seat upgrade with a privacy program.
How this intersects real workflows
Teams already routing documents through US Tech Automations workflows will treat Premium as a model-capacity swap, not a rebuild. The intake form, the CRM write, and the follow-up still run. The person who used to get cut off at hour five on the research step gets a wider seat.
A 10-person shop that already automates form-to-CRM in US Tech Automations can keep Standard seats on intake and put Premium on the two people who write the long reports. That is the same mix in the USTA analysis table: $360 a month annually, not $1,000.
If you already run agentic workflows with US Tech Automations, the next decision is which ChatGPT Business seat each role actually burns. Map it the way you map small-business automation: by job, not by slogan. Home is the index for those workflow pages; platform pricing is the commercial counterpart.
Signal vs Speculation
Fact (sourced): OpenAI announced Premium seats on August 10, 2026 at $125 / $100, 5× usage, no five-hour cap, mixable with $25 / $20 Standard seats, in the same Business workspace, with a waitlist promo of $100 credits per Premium seat up to $500 for the first 10,000 eligible workspaces, ending August 20. The Help Center now says that waitlist is closed. Business still needs 2 seats. Self-serve Business does not include API, BAA, or ZDR. Claude and Microsoft also sell a ~$100 heavy seat or a Copilot add-on in the high teens.
Fact (sourced, adjacent): According to PYMNTS Intelligence, financial firms reached high AI adoption in 27 of 75 tasks in a March survey of 60 U.S. tech executives at companies with at least $1 billion in revenue. That report put revenue recognition at 65%, credit risk and sales forecasting at 60% each, and said 85% of those firms expect to raise AI budgets in the next 12 months. That is large-firm back-office adoption, not a 10-person agency survey.
Our read: If the 5× price-for-5×-usage ratio holds for 12–36 months, small firms will standardize on a barbell: Standard for most logins, Premium for two to four "always-on" roles (owner-operator, lead marketer, lead engineer). Vendors that only sell one expensive seat per human will lose the 8-person remainder of a 10-person shop. The waitlist credit was a 30-day adoption bribe, not a permanent discount; after it, the $160/month delta for two Premium seats is the real SKU.
Our read: Personal Plus/Pro will keep leaking company data unless owners force Business SSO. Premium does not fix that by itself; owner-controlled seats and the no-training default do. Clinics and anyone handling health data should not treat Business Premium as Healthcare-with-a-BAA.
Our read: If OpenAI later puts SCIM, data residency, or a BAA on self-serve Business, Premium becomes more of a mid-market default. Until that is on the Business overview, Enterprise remains the compliance SKU and Premium remains a usage SKU.
Our read: Claude's Team Premium (5× Standard) and Max (from $100, 5× or 20× Pro) mean buyers will compare heavy seats across vendors the way they compare phone plans. The switching cost is prompt libraries and plugins, not the $100 list.

Glossary
ChatGPT Business Premium: The $125 / $100 Business seat with 5× Standard usage and no five-hour cap.
Standard seat: The $25 / $20 Business seat with baseline ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex usage and a five-hour cap.
ChatGPT Business: Self-serve team workspace (renamed from ChatGPT Team on August 29, 2025) with a 2-seat minimum.
ChatGPT Work: OpenAI's agent, powered by GPT-5.6 on the product page, that turns files and plugins into finished documents and Sites.
Codex: OpenAI's coding agent available in ChatGPT, the IDE, and the CLI under the same account.
Workspace credits: Paid or promo units that extend usage past seat limits; promo credits expire in one year under current service-credit terms.
Five-hour cap: The Standard-seat usage window Premium removes.
ChatGPT Enterprise: Sales-led plan with SCIM, custom RBAC, and residency options that Business does not list as self-serve.
Premium is a capacity SKU, not a new operating system. Put it on the people who already run the long jobs, leave Standard on everyone else, and keep the rest of the workflow on rails you already trust. Map those seats onto the agentic workflows you already run, then compare the seat mix to your other automations before you buy a Premium chair for every login.
